Basically as the title says, What are good ways to rinse the dust out of GFO before putting it in a phos reactor? I tried a fish net but the GFO was to fine and washed right thru.

You could use a Purigen bag. I bet a pair of Nylons would work in a pinch as well assuming your wife has some (actualy not sure if mine does :D )

I put mine in the reactor and slowly pour RO/DI water through it until the water comes out clear.

I run my output through a filter sock for about a minute. Make sure the flow is just enough so the top level of gfo is just slightly heaving in the reactor.

btw
this can be done with carbon in a reactor also

I usually change my media at the same time I do a water change. I keep some of the water I removed and use it to wash/rinse the media.
I refill the reactors and run some of this left over saltwater through them with a spare MJ 400 and into the sink till its clear. I then hook them back up to my system and they are good to go.I had used RO/DI but figured why waste it when I can use the tank water I just removed for a water change to do the same thing

I can change one or both reactors at the same time depending on which needs to be changed.

I found these large mesh type bags at the hardware store. They are like the size of a trash bag so i just dump it in there, run water over it, then scoop the media into the reactor.

Right before I do a water change I change my media and run the output into a bucket until it's clear. Then I complete my water change.

Thank you al for your posts. I like the idea of changing it during water changes and just running the output into a bucket.
