i just read this and reef says he used a normal lamp and a normal spiral bulb and said he can grow coral under it?
is this true?
am i missing something?

seeing how he failed to show this corals he can grow under that, i would guess it failed. for good reason too.

26 Watts of PC over that little thing??? SURE you can. Most soft corals can grow in very very low lighting. It might not be the most attractive light color but it WILL grow softies.

Water quality might me the biggest challange.

If its a small tank then it be okay. I grew SPS (Digitata) with it in a 2.5 gallon.

o, so i can just make a hood for my frag tank and load it with regular spiral bulbs?

As long as the tank is 12" deep or less, yes.
