Hello everyone!
I've been lurking the forums for a while, but haven't posted yet, so let me introduce myself.

I'm a 14 year old aquarium enthusiast from western Canada.
I've been in the freshwater hobby all my life thanks to my dad, i didn't get more serious about fish until i was about 9 and my dad got me my first 10 gallon. Ive been researching the saltwater for about 1.5 years, so you could say that this build started 1.5 years ago :P.
i work at a LFS with over 100 tanks, so i learn new things everyday when i go into work.

now lets get this build started. i have a build thread on another forum, but for what it is its too long, so I'll just give you the short version to get you caught up :)

so first off, this tank is going to be mostly zoas, rics, and LPS.
the tank i just got built (not the ones in the pictures) is a new design, so ill post pics when i bring it home.
the tank is 30x12x16 (LxWxH)

now here's my equipment list of what i have so far:
-custom 25 gallon (external overflow)
-Reef Keeper Lite
-Hagen GLO 2x24 watt (plan on adding on another eventually)
-Via Aqua return pump
-refractometer
-custom made sump

so now i just need some small essentials like buckets, siphon tube, salt, plumbing, ect. as my FW tanks are at my dads and my reef is gonna be at my moms since i'm there more.

now for pics:

where it all began:
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/karazy101/017.jpg

next step is lighting:
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/karazy101/072.jpg

next is the stand:
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/karazy101/006-1.jpg
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/karazy101/008.jpg

then the sump:
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/karazy101/007-4.jpg

don't forget the high tech equipment:
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/karazy101/004-7.jpg

and that's as far as I've gotten(other than the new custom tank).
in the next few weeks I'll be working on it as much as i can.

hope you enjoy the adventure as much as i do,
and please feel free to comment as much as you'd like!

nice work. What are you going to use to support the back section. Is that to scale? Is that a refugium area in the back overflow area?

karazy
05/24/2009, 08:29 PM
jay, the back part doesn't need support for 2 reasons.

1.it'll be pressed up against a wall so it cant pull back on the tank

2.with all the baffles theirs basically almost 8 places where its held on, so its a tight hold.

and no its not to scale, and also the back part will be sort of a fuge/mini display tank.(there's a more traditional fuge in the sump)
thinking about puttin a lil baby mantis shrimp in it.

here's pics of the new tank:

Okay, so i painted the back of the tank, and i thought i'd post pics of it.

in the pics im only using 1 of my hagen GLO fixtures, and im using some old bulbs i had lying around, as im waiting for mine to come in.

sorry for the crappy pics, ive only got a point and shoot thats getting pretty outdated

I'm confused about the back section... Can't wait to see it full. Hard to conceptualize your really unique tank.

+1...is that a fuge area?

Wow. How in the world did you come up with that design? That is going to be really cool when it is full and runnin'. Hope that add one weight in back doesn't cause problems, but if it does, looks like it would be an easy fix with some support setup. I really like the idea quite a bit. Hurry up and get it runnin'

karazy
06/16/2009, 08:00 AM
nate82 and akwardparrot:
the back section works like this. the water spills into the box in the back on the left.
it then travels through all the baffles until it reaches the right most chamber, where my drain holes are (i have 2 since im setting it up as a herbie)

DSR:
there should not be any problems because

1.the extra hold with the baffles makes it super strong
2.the back of the overflow box will be flat against the wall (with foam in between) so it cant pull on the back pane.

First Week Of August

if its not up by then, someone slap me.

also, i was tring to think of how to hang my lights, because with the hagen glo, the hardware it comes with for hanging doesnt allow you to adjust the height of the lights, for getting in and out of the tank.
so i jay at elite aquatics gave me the great, yet simple plan, of making a second set of loops, putting those rock climbing clips on them, and then taking the loops that are on the fixture and clipping them to the higher loops (if that makes sense :p)

here's a diagram:

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/karazy101/lightingfig1.jpg

does anybody see any flaws? does anyone know of a good way to make the second, higher up loops for the clips? does anyone know of a better idea all together?

thanks for following my thread, and i hope you guys have some good light hanging ideas

so i threw in some table shrimp on monday to get the cycle going,
so here's the parameters from today:

PH:7.98
dKH:10
calc:400
ammonia:1.0
nitrites:0
nitrates:0
phosphate:2.0

so basically the table shrimp lowered the ph just a lil bit, and made the phosphate go up,
but it looks to me like my cycle has started, so i pulled the shrimp out (that smelled great)

karazy
08/17/2009, 09:36 PM
well the tank has finished cycling, and is growing some algae. woo!

got a new toy today!
colby at elite got it for me.
its a hydor performer series skimmer
we have on running on one of our coral tanks and the skimmate it pulls is crazy, so i thought i'd get one.
this thing is heavy and built very solid.

Why do not you put a plate of black plexy behind the tank (in tank)...Not to see any more pipe?

because your supposed to be able to see into the back. its like a tank on a tank. i have some plans for it.

im guessing you mean the supply pump, which is the hydor seltz L20 which puts out 185 GPH (they do make larger ones though)

and yes, the skimmer is very solid and well built. its a great skimmer with a good price

shweeb passed away. a cardinal ended up in his tank by accident, and he swallowed it. the cardinal was too big to pass through and ended up killing him.
RIP shweeb.
i do plan on getting another frogfish.

i would of had frags in by now but im dealing with stupid flatworms that just won't die. hopefully i can have them gone soon.

oh, and i added sand

well, a bit of an update.
my flatworms are insane. i tried flatworm exit. didnt work. i tried it again (and majorly overdosed) still didnt work.
i tried flatworm eating nudis. they didnt last long enough to make an impact, plus the flatworms were in my sump too so i dont think it was the best strategy.

so tonight i did the ultimate. i wish it didnt have to come to this, but i did a major salinity drop. im just happy i havent added any livestock yet and that i had this option.

buh-bye flatworms

iwishtofish
10/05/2009, 09:27 PM
Wow, I'm glad you had the option to do that! What will your next steps be, once the flatworms have expired? Siphon the dead worms during massive water changes? I guess you might have another cycle before it's all said and done...

yup, siphon out the dead stuff, make sure everything's okay, raise the salinity up by just adding salt to the sump, then get on with water changes and monitor params.

im kind of thinking about redoing my left island of rock. it looks really cool, but its starting to be not the best rock formation. for one, there's a dead spot on the left side of the rock that wouldn't be easily fixed.
second of all it doesn't have a whole lot of space for corals.
third of all, it really doesn't have a lot of hiding places. it has beasicaly one big hole in a rock and thats it.
the only thing im worried about is not being able to make it look as nice as before, and then not being able to get it back to normal if i want to.

opinions?

I can understand why you'd want to eliminate the dead spot; I wouldn't worry too much about not being able to get it "just right." You need to find the happy medium, and this is your chance to experiment with the flow.

Also, have you considered using reef-safe epoxy or putty to scape your rock? Coralline usually masks it, whereas the tie-straps might always be noticeable. They really don't look too bad, but its something I would consider.

Let us know when you've beat the flatworms!

karazy
10/08/2009, 09:38 PM
i think im going to change around my left island as a inhabitant i may have coming would require it.

i will let you know when the flatworms are gone. today i only saw one little one in the whole system.

so, pictures of the new aqua scape as promised.
its full of neat holes and caves and should make for a better scape all around.
other reasons why i re-scaped will slowly reveal themselves.
i did really love my other scape, but it just wasn't functional and had barley and spots for good coral placement
(sorry for the low quality pics, the tank was cloudy from being messed around with)

im just curious, how doe s a14 year old work in a fish store, dont you have to be 15 or older to legally work in the USA?

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets wage, hours worked, and safety requirements for minors working in jobs covered by the statute. The rules vary depending upon the particular age of the minor and the particular job involved. As a general rule, the FLSA sets 14 years of age as the minimum age for employment, and limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16.

this is the first time ive seen someone have their sump be visible through the rear wall of the display area- that is unique.

Do you find that distracting, or do you like it that way? For me it would be very distracting and un-natural- but i know alot of people like it that way.

That frogfish was awesome though!! Schweeb, lol !

thanks guys!
to answer your question NM, it really isnt that bad.
i do have an actual sump under the tank too so i dont really have equipment to make the mini fuge section in the back look cluttered.
i do sometimes think that it would have looked better without the back section, but the fact that i have extra room for the predatory weird fish i like is just too much of a pro for it to bug me.

neb, its a dwarf golden moray eel-Gymnothorax meletremus

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets wage, hours worked, and safety requirements for minors working in jobs covered by the statute. The rules vary depending upon the particular age of the minor and the particular job involved. As a general rule, the FLSA sets 14 years of age as the minimum age for employment, and limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16.

w000000000t thank you!!!!! lol im 14 and need some cash... unfortunatley my "LFS" is about an hours away (well its the only one i know about around me). we have 2 maintainers in my hometown... wonder if i could work with one of them :)

my friend knows a guy who knows a collector in hawaii, so he got me a good deal on this one, straight from the supplier.

Yeah I was going to put a snowflake moray in my 33 (48" long). Now I think I'll put in one or two dwarfs.

the frogfish is doing awesome. still very tiny but doing well. he is still only eating live, but i think he will have to grow quite a bit more before i can get him onto frozen food.

well i finally got all my frags off the sand so i thought i'd post a FTS in celebration.
it does look quite bare now though, but i do have something coming that should cover up a good chunk of the right island.
oh, and for those who noticed the new addition, Cirrhilabrus lubbocki

hey guys and gals,

so heres some updates on the tank.
some stocking changes have happened. first of the jawfish got switched out with a tailspot blenny. he kept spooking the other fish at night.
also i have ich in the tank, but only on one fish. the neon goby is covered but everyone else is fine. it's been like that for a few weeks and i haven't been able to catch him for treatment.
the weiredest and most displeasing stocking change is my lubboks fairy wrasse died. it was one of those deaths where i dont think ill ever be able to find out what happened. all the params were fine and the other fish were happy as ever (as they still are) but one day he started swimming kinda weird and limp like, and by the next day he could barley swim and was super stressed out. death followed quickly.
i also got some new sps from a local frag swap that are doing quite well.
but the biggest update by far is....

IM UPGRADING THIS TANK TO A BIGGER SIZE!
watch for the build thread.

well a little update.

looks like my interest is heading towards the sps side of the hobby so my tank is as well.
i added two new fish. a longfin fairy wrasse and a yellow-green canary blenny.
i also built a new mesh lid so i am finaly not running stupid glass lids (thanks carmen!)

the question i have for you reefers is what should i do with my right rock island.
its got a bit of a weird flow around it being so close to the vortech and none of my sps seem to enjoy it very much (minus the purple valida, but its pretty close to the other island)
my idea was some sort of anemone, but im afraid of it ending up like a bull in a china cabinet and ending up with tons of stung up SPS.
thoughts?
