I have used this sand in FW African Cichlid tanks, I know that it is a very fine sand and compacts. You also have to wash it very well because there are all kinds of sticks and other things mixed in it. it is a silica sand so it will be diatom city in a SW set up.

I have it in my 150g tank.

I wouldn't trust it, personally. There is no telling what is in it. They don't have any standards to follow. Spend a few extra dollars, and get the stuff that is made for a Fishtank...

but thats just me.

It is dark yellow compare to the white argonite sand and contain alot of silica which will make your tank bloom diatom endlessly. For a 75 gallon, 2-3 bags of aragonite is not going to break the bank and it will look nice and troublefree.

I thought I remembered reading an article from Randy Holmes Farley (or from another expert forum) a couple years ago on this subject, and he determined it was alright to use. I could be mistaken though... I'm going to look into it. IMO though I probably wouldn't use it just to be on the safe side. Better safe than sorry.

After re-reading some of this stuff it looks like it is probably best to not use it. Heres the article from Randy Holmes-Farley all about silia in the reef aquarium. You can scroll halfway down the page to read specifically about silica sand. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/jan2003/feature.htm

And here's a pretty good read on another forum that also talks about a test you can do on sand to determine how safe it is.
