What is the best substrate for mangrove tree's? I am currently making a fuge with mangroves and I have a bunch of aragonite sand that I can use for it. I would rather use the fuge mud but I do not have any and I would rather not spend much more money if I will get the same benifits from adding a deep sand bed to my mangrove fuge along with some live rock in there. Only thing I can figure is that I would be losing some of the trace elements that come along with the mud. Would my regular water changes be enough to make up for this difference or would I need to get an all purpose trace element suppliment for the tank? I have a approx 20 gallon rubbermaid tupperware that I am going to use with a maxijet 1200 feeding it. I have 120 lbs of aragonite sand because I am replacing all the sand in my display tank with oolite grade caribsea. So how deep should I go with the sandbed for the mangroves and should I put some sandsifting cucumbers in the fuge along with mabe some nass. snails or some sandsifting starfish? I would like to have some other macro algaes in there as well along with some live rock rubble that I will place on top of the sandbed with a light diffuser for a seperator between the mangroves and the live rock. Some of the algae I will stick to the rock if it will grow like that well and I want to put some speghetti algae in with the mangrove stalks. Any Ideas? Thanks!
