x10 on Steve's numbers and you have a starting point. I knew it was pointless to keep track around 2 weeks into buying stuff.

for 300 or larger custom, i would say at least 3000 and upward. i was well over this for my 320gal, but i am in Canada , so fewer options i would guess. ( this is just for the tank itself, as you mentioned )

Shop around, look at prefab and compare to some of the more common build to suit companies.
I'd say you will be anywhere from $1500-$7000.
All depends on what you mean by 'custom'.
You can spend $10K in one household and have a full tank of items and in another household the $10 grand doesn't even put water in the tank. LOL

I like that Steve:

My complete system cost me $2000.00 that is what i told my wife

That marineland 300g isnt too pricey for a large tank, then you can spend $5k+ on an AGE.

If you want 300g, look seriously at the Marineland 300. It's a stock tank and should run you less than $2000. When I decided that I wanted a taller tank, the price went up to $10,000 for a 550g that has the same 36x72 footprint as the Marineland.
I like jarhead's answer though and I think that I'll use that on my wife too, especially since I need to call and order my BK skimmer tommorrow.

I'm in the process of getting a used 450... my wife keeps asking how much for equipment and stuff. I just keep telling dont worry it wont be too bad, but , when the dart for the OM and this big skimmer comes to the house ( and go figure.. its the day she gets home before me ) and she freaks... she knows its not cheap, but I never said she was dumb when it comes to reef tanks and just FO tanks ( we have 3 ) But look at around 4000 and that is a conservative guess. IMHA of course

My 300 gallon AGE with two very large external overflows, starphire 3-sides, was just under $3500. That does not include the steel stand, or crating/shipping.

My 200 Gallon fully stocked with corals, clams, fish, RO/DI unit, water storage, pumps, skimmer, LR, 400 W light fixture + much more ran me around $20,000

Just wondering but you guys that throw out big numbers for total tank $ do you just go buy new or shop around for nice used equipment?

scottallert

usually people that have the big tanks, can afford the new and not look for the used.

Guess that makes some sense, I just had to ask. I am not one to personally run out and buy new equipment if I can find quality used stuff.

I'm not looking very hard for used equipment, but I do shop around for the best deals I can, and DIY things that I feel comfortable with.

I feel that there's a tremendous savings to doing things correctly the first time. :)

One thing you should *not* do is haggle over the price of custom work, IMO.

New: –adjective
1. of recent origin, production, purchase, etc.; having but lately come or been brought into being.

So that "New" Skimmer you bough isn't "new" forever. Used items are just as good as new items (Unless theyre wear items like bulbs). Browsing the RC classifieds can save you tons of cash. Many times people are just selling their equipment because THEY ALSO upgraded or changed their mind, and no longer need the equipment. Id rather take that savings from buying used, and help fill my tank. Just my opinion, though.

I work as a glazer and as a custom tank builder for a LFS. I run the CNC machine for the glass company I work for. I am in the process of building a 375gal tank(96x30x30),out of 15mm(5/8), the glass cost me $2500cnd. Never mind the time it took to cut, polish and CNC the glass. I havn't even got around to builing it yet. A good tank will cost you, but it is worth it. As for starphire glass, don't waste your money. It cost twice as much and you notice little difference. It is super soft and takes nothing to scratch or damage.

That's interesting; the first time I had heard or read that... are you talking about genuine Starphire glass or some knock-off product identified as "starfire" or something like that?

Can you point me to some studies that show that Starphire (from PPG) is super soft and takes nothing to scratch or damage?

Back to the original post question, the cost for an AGE tank in the gallonage you seek is just as desribed in the previous reply from phuzzykins.

Thanks.
