Hi,
I'm trying to buy an LED light that will work for the 2nd chamber on my biocube. It needs to be waterproof and produce the right light. I'm having a hard time finding one off ebay. Can someone give me a hand?
thanks

heyitsomid,

LED lighting is a hot topic in the Lighting Equipment Forum. You will find a group of much more educated hobbyists in this field than in this forum in most cases. ;)

hi cliff,
yeah i posted there the other night but there is a lot going on there. And I figure who would know best about lighting up macro algae than the people here!

Macro algae do not need a lot of light. They seem to do fine at wavelengths around 6500 K. I use 18 W. compact florescent Natural Daylight bulbs from Home Depot for my fuge. You will not need too many of them for most refugium. They are pretty economical to use, low on heat production and run in regular light sockets. They also have a good life expectancy.

FWIW, I do not see where investing in LED lighting for a fuge would be worth it.

Yeah I have a fluorescent right now, its pointing from off the side into the corner of the display where my chaeto is growing. Space is limited in the 2nd chamber of my filter on the biocube and LEDs were more for the space than anything else. I also liked the idea of just putting it in the water. I've found some waterproof ones that i'm just going to have to experiment with. I want to open the dispay up a little bit more.

Just go to amazon and type in the words "LED panel"

You will come back here and thank me.

There are soooooo many cool LED fixtures out there
CHEAP that can be modified and waterproofed.
I am running a 40 gallon breeder PACKED with lower light stonys and softies, w/two of the white ,(13.5 WATT) 1'x1' led warehouse panels.
I am also using one of their plant grow panels,(red+blue) for an algae scrubber on one system.

Opsanus tau,

I am curious as to what the wavelength & wattage of these panels are? This is all new to me. :)

I use (3) Current USA PowerBrite LED strips on my CPR HOB fuge and I get decent growth from my Chaeto.

I think I know what the OP is asking because I'm looking for something similar for my biocube. I just wish there was a way to differentiate between the LEDs that you would have on a keychain as opposed to the more powerful type of LED that you would use for your main lighting. Since I know that chaeto doesn't need anything special when it comes to light, I would just go with the keychain style with the glass (plastic?) bulb around it. Although I am considering the submersible that rehype directed you to. mediabaskets.com has lots of cool stuff for the biocube, they are definetly worth a look. Plus if you spend enough time on the forums (you know the other one) you will recognize the reefer in question as being reasonably knowlegable.

I recently discovered
an 8 inch T5 fixture from Walmart
4watts and that has been doing the job
for my Solana with cheato growing,
you can always attach two or three
I will post pictures soon.
