I will start by saying that I am building this new tank because I am moving 400 miles north to the bay area and I wont have enough room for my current tank. The actual tank is being built by John at Advance Acrylics. http://www.advanceacrylics.com/ The display is going to be a 30x30x20 inch tank with 1/2 acrylic and 3 inch euro brace. I really like the look of my current tank that is rimless but with earthquakes seeming to be happening more I decided for the euro bracing. Today I stopped by at home depot and got all the stuff to build the tank. Anyways here are pics of the supplies and the frame drying.

Wow... If the new tank looks like the quality of work of your current tank, it is going to awesome! Your corals, aquascaping, tank, equipment choices, etc are all great choices, your current tank is stunning... Good luck with the build, this is going to be fun...

I got it from someone locally for $30. It was almost white. I have to get rid of it. :(

Taylor,
This one will be acrylic right? I love my acrylic tank, just can be a pain in the butt when cleaning. I have actually started using, and subscribed to the thread about "Magic Erasers" to clean the inside part of the tank. Works like a charm.... Anyway, looks like alot of fun, keep the thread going bro!

Yeah it will be acrylic. Do you mind posting the thread? The search feature rarely works for me.

Alright today I finished the stand. I went with 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of black, and 3 coats of white. I also added a base piece of plywood and sealed it so it would be water proof since it will be on carpet. Doors will be added later on when I have more time for the tank. For now I need to finish up school this quarter and get packed for the move. Tank should be here this weekend for the transfer!

looks like its gonna be a great tank just like the old one:) One Q i had is about the metal parts in the stand. Even though they are fully covered with paint, r U worried that they will eventually corrode and cause some issues with the integrity of the stand?

Thanks, I am not to worried about it to be honest. I basically check over my tanks daily and even if the they started to corrode, it would still stand till it needed to be fixed. Plus I can't seem to stay with one tank for more than a few years

Here's the stand in its temporary space until I move.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c305/ScruzTaylor/80%20gallon%20build/P1030813.jpg

I picked seaflor special grade reef sand today to put as a 1 inch layer on my old sand bed. I am doing this because the flow from vortech makes mini tornados with the sugar grain sand.

Yeah since this tank is smaller I wanted to have as much space as possible so I went with the external overflow.

tmantaylor18
06/01/2009, 06:21 PM
Alright I finally got some time to take some pictures of my progress today. It was a pretty rough couple of days. The main thing that caused problems was the amount of noise the external overflow made. I ended up making a hofer gurgle buster to silence the tank. Tomorrow I should be getting the metal tubing to hang the lights from the tank. For now this 36 watt 10k powercompact will have to do. I also went ahead and replaced the mag 9.5 with a tunze 1073.040 for the return. This pump pushes about 800 gph and is dead silent. It even uses less wattage then the comparable eheim.

coming along nicely, taylor. good choice on the tunze, i plan to get the same one for my next tank. how's the flow control on the silence pump? i notice you have a valve on your return output so i was wondering if the pump's throttle control was any good.

tmantaylor18
06/02/2009, 08:10 PM
I honest set that valve on there thinking I was going to use the mag. I am just gonna use it now that I already went through the trouble. The pump's throttle looks like a really nice and effective design.

taylor, 2 quickies:

1- how much heat does the tunze pump create?

2- hows the bk doing, I may be upgrading to a similar tank soon and the mini 200 is what i was looking at.

3- did you get the radium rigged over the tank yet? if yes, pic us please.

Not sure but my tank temp doesnt go up as fast now with the tunze. It only pulls 42 watts at almost 800 gph.

The bk is still breaking in on the new tank, it usually takes a few weeks.

I finally got the radium last night, I will post some pics in a little while.

Yeah just went to homedepot and bought a 1/2 inch metal rod from the lighting department and a tube bender. Total cost was $2 for the rod and $35 for the bender. I bent the rod and returned the bender. As far as a FTS I am a little embarassed of the structure because I just threw stuff in for the time being. It looks better from that angle but I will get one later anyways.

@taylor,

any recent fts?

hows the lighting working out? the elite too focused in the center, or giving you good spread throughout the tank?

Im not sure if the pixtures are distorting the viewing angle, but the tank looks a bit taller than I would expect it to be for 18". is the tank 303018, or were some last minute modifications made?

Marineland makes these tanks standard now, and have 2 options, 303018 or 303024. Im trying to gauge which way I should go by your tank :D cuz its so nice.

Yeah it is 30x30x20 as stated in the first post. Guess you have me mixed with someone else. I would highly recomend this height because any shorter and you are taking away a lot of viewing area. 30 30 24 would be nice with a 400 watt halide!

Here are some pics finally! It was a crazy move with all my stuff including the reef, corals, and fish! Nothing died and most corals are looking pretty good. Only a few browned out a little but everything should look great again in the next few months! Can't wait to get settled into the reef community up here so I can start some trades. I don't know if I am set on the aquascape, but I might just leave it so I don't keep stressing everything.

This is all old rock, I just take more and more out with each new setup. Lol I don't know what it is but I feel like I wont have any live rock one day. Also my fish are in there, they are just hiding probably. My trigger, wrasse, and blenny all made the epic journey fine. I am looking to add something else soon.

Just got my 170 yesterday from Tom at socaltropical fish! I had to downgrade from a mini 200 gen 2 because I downgraded to a much smaller tank. The mini was collecting all of the crap in the skimmer body, not even the neck.

So far it has been running for a little under 24 hours and I am impressed. Does anyone know if the 170 will work best in 10 inches of water also? I am running it on an 80 gallon heavily stocked tank right now.

Been a while since I updated this thread, and some changes have occurred since the last one. I had a little user error with my reefkeeper which lead to my light being on for 3 straight days while I was out of town. A lot of my sps bleached out but is doing better now.
I also had my structure collapse one night so I decided to change it up a little. Here are some new pics.

holy crap f@^k me. That is one beautiful tank. I wish I had seen it before I scaped mine. The rocks are great, and every single selection of coral is out of this world. I love how the blue cloves have taken to the rock, do you have any trouble keeping them off the sps? Ive been looking to spread them around my tank for a while now but havnt pulled the trigger yet.
Do you do any dosing? Or is the 170 your primary filtration? &bowdown;

Taylor,

That cube tank looks extremely sweet, congratulations...

Im eventually gonna upgrade in the next couple of months my 20" cube to a larger 36x36x20 cube...

Im interested in finding out how you did the transfer from one tank to the other and not cycle the new one.

Did you transfer the sand bed or used new sand? you just used the old live rock from your running tank? new water or did you used water from your current system and mixed it with teh new water?

You did the whole tank transfer in a day?

Once again awsome cube you got there...

THX in advance

tmantaylor18

Thanks a lot kmu, sounds like you are going to love those demensions. You will have to link me to your build thread when that happens. I transferred all of my live sand that was around 6 months old or so and then added a little more to put on top since the old sand was blowing around to much. All of the rock came from my old setup as well. All I did with the rock is swish it around a ton in 3 different buckets to get it nice and clean for the new setup. I'm not sure how old your sand is, but if it is really established I would recommend not using it. I used about 1/4 of my old water just to transfer everything up and then had premade water at the same salinity ready to go in the new tank. Somehow I managed to tear down the tank early morning, get it packed into the truck, drive 8 hours north, and then set it all up in one day. I thought I was going to die.

I really like those blue cloves. They seem to contrast really well against some of your SPS, except the blue tort, they blend in a bit with that piece.

The aquascape looks good. I need to keep that idea in mind on my shallow tank.

I went to the other side this week while on vacation....Zeovit:)

I had diatoms, bubble algae, red bubble algae, hair algae, you name it, I think putting too much bacteria in is where I went wrong. The only one I have seen succesful thus far with that system is SunnyX... Tswifty has done really well with it, but also battled several alagaes, I think he will out last it though, looks like things are getting really nice for him. I would really contemplate using VSV with biweekly dosing of bacteria...

Yeah I have been ultra busy with school so I have had little time to update on here. Anyways, I actually downgraded to a breeder since I have less time to be spending on the tank. Having to only do 15 gallon changes has cut down on that a lot for me.
