So I bought my first coral from a lfs. I went to faois and recieved great help. I got a really small frag of frogspawn and it was attacked by one of my BL hermit. I put what was left in a container and it finally died. There is no color left and just the skeleton !!! I
Am so upset that it is gone. I was so excited about buying this. I really want one, do I have to take all the crabs out to have one??

That's weird your BL attacked it. I have a few frogspawn in my tank and they have never been messed with by any of my crabs. Are you sure the cause of death was because of the BL hermit?

Don't throw it out. Sometimes they can come back. Odd that a BL ate it.

I'm a good distance from you, but I have a piece with 2 heads you can have. Got it with some stuff from a tank a few months ago, didn't really want it and tossed it in the bottom of my frag tank. Sucker is looking better than when I got it.

Thanks grouper. I'll take u up on that. Very dissappointed this happened. And yea I'm sure the bl did it. I pulled it off and a third of it was gone. I threw the crap away and within ten min it as back and more of the heads were gone. I put it in a container and it slowly all Color gone and barley is anything is left. Looks dead

I'm in SE Lakeland and I have a few heads I can frag off for you also. Not sure if that is any closer to you or not, but the offer is there.

Sorry to hear that happened.

I have heard of crabs crawling over Frogspawn, Hammers, etc.. and causing them to close up, but I haven't heard of them attacking them. Are you sure the frag wasn't damaged? It dosen't take much to damage those types of coral in transport.

Yea I'm sure the crab did it

do you have other lps in your system? what are they doing? i really cant see a bl attacking a frogspawm, crawling over it, and damaging tissue, yes, that damaged tissue as well as any water parameter issue's could easily cause a coral to rtn, especialy one that was recently introduced into a new system and especially if due dilligence wasnt taken in the introduction of that coral to your system. your title seems like your calling out faois, which i dont think is right. i would say its lack of exp/ and knowledge or just the luck we run into in this hobby. not the fact that you bought it from faois or the blue leg. posting my first coral from faois is dead in bold print prob. isnt the best thing to do to any tbrc sponsor.

I don't see it as him calling them out. Beginning of his post he said he picked up his first store-bought coral. That's all it means.

take a water sample to faois and see where your levels are at. get red legged crabs while your there. one of my first corals was $160 hammer. it was dead in a week. but sense then i have proly spent 4 to $6,000 in live stock from faois and all i lost is a hammer and a spider sponge. good ratio to me. don't get frustrated. there are many diff factors that could play a roll in if a coral lives or dies. how long has your tank been up and running? did you drip acclimate it?

ooo, I'm telling John you killed one of his corals. J/K Drunky, as much as it sucks sometimes these things happen and it's a mystery. I once put it a nice plug of Anthelia from a fellow reefer, the peppermint shrimps swarmed it right away and over night, they dragged it under one of the rocks. Needless to say it died. I've added some since then and they've left it alone. I don't think the BL killed the frogspawn but they may have sensed it was on the way out.

I just lost my last clam I bought from John. I know it's not his fault or the store. I'm cursed. I lost ones I bought from Corral Corral, Marine Warehouse, Exotic Aquatics, and that place in Lakeland. (can't remember the name) as well as local reefers. If your reading this John....

DON'T LET ME BUY ANY MORE CLAMS!!!!!!!!!

Unless it's as strips on a menu.:p

i reposted just so ppl didnt get the wrong idea from my other thread. ok, lets get this behind us, i did let some of my tank water drip into the bag while it sat in the tank in its own container., i have done this with all my coral and works nicley. the first day the frogspawn worked out great, i decided to move it the next day and when i got home i noticed the crab pulling at it and pinching it. i pulled it off and a loose piece came with it. this happened twice. i have BL everywhere in my tank and they dont mess with any of my coral. i even added a nice chalice i got from John (thanks again :) ) and it is doing great. just bad luck i guess. thanks every one for the help.

oh and side note, i also bought some ic-gel and so far so good. ( if you have read previous thread about glue lol)

FWIW, I had blue legs go after a new plug of watermelon palys. Acclimated them in the frag tank for about a week. All was well, full polyps, etc. Moved them into the main tank. Gone in two days.

Got another frag from the same guy. Grew from 3 polyps to about 12 and then somebody went after it again. I'm back to 3 polyps again. I'm pretty sure the second go round was my goldflake angel. He has developed a taste for zoas and palys lately.

I've only seen those bl hermits eat away the dead/dying tissue. Never witnessed them eating healthy living tissue.
Sounds like you have alot of offers for a second try at frogspawn though.
Isn't this club great?!

i've seen the blue legs go on a killing spree. killing snails left and right. and the snails were not dying either. i trust my ball pythons more then bl hermit crab.

yeah i have issues

Yea I may take them out. I don't wanna take anymore chances. They attack each other and my snails. I'm going to start a thread with input on what ppl use for a cuc and what problems if any they have with bl.

might try putting some empty shells in the tank for them to make into new habitat. they ususally go after snails and each other for a larger shell/home. as they grow they need larger shells.

or just get some red legs. and just maintain what you got for a little bit.
