What would be the best pump to go with external that would be about the same performance as a mag 18 internal also needs to be on 110 volt 15 amp plug. This is a basement set up and the tank has one overflow
thanks Rich

Well maybe a Iwaki MD40RLXT but really depends on what your head height is.

I would say it's about 12' high from the sump

Marine Depot has flow rate charts for the pumps that they sell. You can see the flow of the Mag18 at 12 feet and compare it to various external pumps to find a flow rate you want.

I have had really good luck with Iwaki better part of a decade on both mine and still going strong.

What GPH do you need out of it?

If its the 90G, you should shoot for ~ 450 GPH @ 12'.

If its the 90G, you should shoot for ~ 450 GPH @ 12'. You miss a 0 in there?? 90 x 12x turn over. I would say, minimum of a1400gph at 12'.

No, 450 GPH is what I meant. That is 5x turnover from the return which is on the high side. How would you get 1400 GPH down a 600 GPH overflow?

I haven't set it up yet, but also have a 90 and am planning a basement sump. I purchased a nearly new Panworld NH150PS. It's a pressure rated pump and deals well with head pressure, up to almost 28' if I'm not mistaken. They are comparable to Iwaki pumps but cost somewhat less.

Thanks for all the information I know some people that are using a mag 18 in this setup and they say it works good. I am using a mag 12 now and I know it's a slow turn over so maybe the 18 would work ok. Do you know if any of the external pumps need to be wired or do they have a 110 plug on them? I will look into some of the brands and yes my setup is a 90 with a 100 gal. stock tank for a sump.
Thanks Rich

I agree... Look at the ReeFlo Snapper. It can be throttled back to get you the flow you need. It also is energy efficient and wont heat your water. It is also reasonably priced.

As for flow rate, if you only have 1 overflow it should be able to handle about 700 gph without trouble. You will need to add some powerheads to increase your flow to somewhere around 3000 gph in the tank.

I would recommend a few Koralias. Maybe a pair of Koralia 4s or a Magnum Koralia 5. The advantage of the Magnums is that you could hook it up to a wavemaker.

Ok price about the same reeflow snapper or Iwaki MD40RLT what pump would you pick? Why does the snapper have a head shut off much lower than the Iwaki

A pump heating the water is not necessarily a bad thing. It may be desirable. Not everyone has a problem with a tank that runs too hot. I have a Gen-X Mak4 air cooled external now as a basement sump return pump. It works great and all, but am switching it out for a Velocity T4 which is a water cooled external. My basement is cool year round and my heaters run a lot to keep the system @ 78. Instead of venting the heat from the pump off into the air, it will go to the water where I need it. Just trying to make the system a little more efficient.
