I saw the whole auction to its completion. The full retail value of the scoly was $999.00. It sold for $1,738.00. Who said we're in a recession. :lolspin:

I do not save pictures of the corals. Some people are straight nuts when it comes to LPS corals; especially chalices. When the aussie stuff was first being imported, seeing $1500 price tags was almost a weekly sight.

I agree that its a lot of money to spend on a coral, especially one that has no proven history in captivity.

Your right, now I remember, LPS's then for ridiculous when then first were being imported. you would pay $1500 for a small piece. I agree, their people out there that will pay whatever to have what no one else has.

There was a supposed "one of a kind" frogspawn @ my LFS recently. It was all flourescent green (not just the tips). They wanted a $1000.00 for around 5-6 heads.

I have an all flourescent green frogspawn and I don't think its all that rare.

Dustin at aquatic auctions is a good source for "rare" aussie corals like that one. Personally, those corals aren't really my thing, but it's very nice looking.

You are right Robby, Dustin does get his share of some awesome looking Aussie's. He told he, in time, he will also be getting into stonys. I'm looking forward to that.

Ebay started the "driving up the prices" in the hobby. Until we as hobbyist chose not to purchase them at these prices, it will continue on :(

Good grief, I bet whomever bought that would cry if that thing lost color or browned out in their aquarium.

Answer to OP: My most expensive coral is an orange/red bubble tip anemone purchased for about $120, that split from a parent owned by another local reefer. For the most part, I buy all small 1" captive propagated frags. Buying colonies is cheating IMO, I want to see the tank thrive and grow over time.

No, others have shown up that are similar. It is a natural scolymia.

I could find plenty of corals that are nicer (to me), that don't even come close to that price tag. But it's all about personal preference. For me, I'd much rather have some nice acros, which typically can be had for relatively cheap. Scoly's are nice, but they're not my thing, especially at that price. But hey, if someone's got the cash, and that's what they like, more power to them.

Personally, I think the whole trade has gotten a bit out of hand. Slap a crazy name on some color morph of zoas or something, then slap an equally crazy price tag on it. Not for me. The craziest I get is for ORA frags, which for the most part I can get locally for 30-50 bucks, unless I want something really outrageous like a Red Planet or a Pearlberry...then I gotta spend ~$80. :eek1:

"I named them Purple Hornets myself. Therefore, you can assure that you are getting the original Purple Hornets when bidding on my auction."

I'm going to get something purple, and name it accordingly. Maybe I can get $300 a polyp too! ;)

Scolys are IMHO overrated, they don't even come close to accros or other SPS. Looking at scolly tanks looks pretty weird to me it's not even clsoe to what you usually see while diving and they just give this plasticky look to the tank. Don't really understand why they have to be this expensive.
to add to the above people still buying them at those outrageous prices is just wrong. Again IMHO
