Hi guys, I ordered a zebra moray eel online and I am pretty sure I got a barred moray eel. I hope this place will give me a refund or something because barred moray eels are cheap and very ugly when they get bigger.

I can't contact the online vendor until monday but I just want to make sure, I've never really seen a same zebra moray eel so I'm not too sure if they look different when they are young.
Thanks!

Ouch....Yep,that is a Barred Moray (Echidna polyzona)....Not a bad community fish, similar to Snowflake Eel in temperament and size as far as I know, however typically far less expensive than your Zebra you ordered.

Let me guess....That Pet Place where you got it from?

Sorry about the mix up. Hopefully you get it straightened out.

Kirk, why do you say that pet place?

I believe they get a tad bit bigger than snowflakes but you are deffinetly correct in species, and looks as they get bigger

I actually got it from vivid aquariums surprisingly, I've had such good service from them. I'll let you know on monday how it goes, thanks guys.

Does not look like Zebra to me (I have a Barred). Either a juvenile Barred Moray (Echidna polyzona) (http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=5389) (grounded conical teeth for crushing inverts) or Banded Moray (Gymnothorax rueppellii) (http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=5396) (sharp pointy teeth to catch fish).

They have a lot more of a "big box/Petco" feel to them to me. More likely to have "Little Timmy" the high school kid boxing fish than the other online dealers.....Certainly didn't mean to offend anyone whom is a fan.:D

My vote is E polyzona. Would you keep it and ask for the difference in cost refunded?

No, you didn't offend me. They are somewhat local to me (1.5 hours away) so I used to frequent there often. And your right, they have kids boxing stuff up, sometimes telling me I can't mix this fish with that etc etc. They do have marine biologists on staff, but still, everyone else there doesn't know much, but thinks they do. I have seen a huge decline in their customer service and just over all not that great of a store anymore. I used to go couple times a month, now its once or twice a year if they are lucky.

bigwaz, any update?

It is def the barred, it has sharp teeth. I will call them monday when they are open. I know two things, I don't like him, and I don't want him in my tank. Good thing I had a QT tank ready to put him in otherwise I would have had an extremely hard time pulling him out.

don't the barred have "pebble" teeth, like the zebra moray?

Yes, E. polyzona is a pebble tooth.

If teeth are sharp, it's a Banded Moray (Gymnothorax rueppellii).

Poor thing....he did not ask to be plucked from the ocean just to have someone say they don't want him. Please don't kill him. I think he is cute. Ask for a refund and donate him to your local fish store. You really can't send him back. Let us know how it goes. Lesley

What do you think I'm going to do with the eel? Heave it at a car? haha. I'm going to give it to somebody in my local area for free, and vividaquarium is sending me a zebra moray eel, they offered to send it over for tomorrow but I can't receive it until friday but they apologized and are fixing the problem. Awesome service!

I have a G. rueppellii at home, that does not look like one.

That thing's teeth may look sharp, but a G. rueppellii has large sharp teeth, including a large palatal fang. The head also tends to be yellow and more gracile than the eel shown in this thread.
