I'm planning on using a 55 gallon tank as a sump. I was thinking of two overflows plumbed with 3/4" pvc and a mag 12 as the return pump. Will this work out or should I use 1" pvc?

3/4" drains are far too small IMO. You have to consider things getting in there and blocking flow (and they will).
personally I like 1 1/2" drain lines. 1" would work though.

The only difference between 3/4 and 1" is less frictional losses with one inch.

I'd use 1" minimum.

So the mag 12 will have no problem keeping up with two 1" overflow's plumbed independently?

The overflows will only "overflow" as much water that is being pumped into the tank, up to the limit of how much they can drain.

So, of you are pumping 600 gph into the tank, the overflows will drain 600 gph (( again assuming that they can handle that amount ))

Durso or siphon? A 1" durso is a PITA, the system designer recommends 1.25" minimum for a durso. (even on a 1" bulkhead) larger is better and QUIETER, at a given flow. As stated above, 3/4" is not even in the game. As for plugging up, it is easier to plug up a 1" than a 1.25" pipe. If you are thinking of two 1" siphons, please don't. FWIW

i'd do atleast 1" to 1.5" because like people said things will get clogged in this pipe and you don't want 10-20 gallons of saltwater on your floor due to a clogged drain, also you may want to consider a valve on the outlet of the pump just in case if you need to restrict flow for some reason.
