I want to try an SPS and LPS dominated tank with very few softies. I do not want to keep my 220g. I'm tired of dealing with the height and not being able to reach much in the tank.

Here's what I'm thinking, and please tell me what you think of this. I think I'd like to buy a 75g or 120g to "try" SPS, get into a good routine, learn, but not be overwhelmed. In the meantime, piece out my 220g and keep a few good corals and fish. Then start thinking about the 220's replacement...at that time, will I want double the workload for an SPS tank, or will I find that the 75-120g range is perfect for me, and I can go with a softie dominated BIG tank.

Just thinking outloud here. What do you guys think?

A 120 is a good size. Have you thought about a shallow tank?

You might want to look into the new Perfecto cube tanks for the SPS system. They are well built and actually aren't overly expensive.

a2fire is selling a complete setup. i wish i could sell my tanks to pick his up. i love the mixed reef tank because if something goes wrong with one type of coral you do not wipe the whole thing out. i can empathize with the tall tank being a royal pain though. my display is 30 in high and very difficult to get to the bottom. sps is no different than any other type coral tank. good husbandry and research will yield a beautiful looking tank. if you need any help or recommendations please do not hesitate to ask.

Hey Amanda.. If I were you I'd go for a 120. I've got a 90 and you have much more room to aquascape in a 120. The price really isn't much different either.

agree with Chris on the 120, I've got the 90 also and it would be better to have the extra width. I think you'll like the depth as long as you don't get too tall of a stand though.

Extra work for sps? Over softies? Buy the right equipment when you set it up and the work is very close to the same.

I don't think I could get away with slacking on water changes or dosing nearly as much with an SPS dominated tank.

Auto doser and slacking can be bad.
