i was asked to start a thread giving ideas on what we might need and where to get equipment for collecting. 1st of all you will need a salt water fishing license. you can get this at walmart, online, or any sports or fishing store. you will need a bucket to bring the specimen home. if you plan on physically catching snails, shrimp, crabs, etc. it would be helpful to buy a net. for around $5 you can buy a small bait net at walmart. for around $15 you can buy a cheap shrimp net at any bait store or stores like west marine. if you buy a net make sure it is a "shrimp" net or a fine mesh. you can catch shrimp, crabs, cerith and nassarius snails, blennies/gobies in the grass flats. for nassarius snails you can make a pvc trap(4+" diameter pvc pipe, 1/4" holes drilled all around) and put frozen shrimp inside and the snails will come to you. or you can get a bamboo skewer, poke it through the shrimp and stick it in the sand. hope this helps.

Metal cricket keeper works too. It's mesh w/ one end that opens(lid floats too). Portable air pump and stone for the buckets too.

You looked like you were enjoying them so much. I decided to not be greedy and let you have all of them.
Thanks for the tips. I'll try to hook up with you.

I am not going to make it to Ft Desoto on Sunday have to work :( I hope some can take pictures of collection techniques and what kind of thing have been caught... Once I get pictures want to create a reference page for local members on what can be found and how to catch them... I think this would be great reference for fellow reefers and newbies that may want to know how

We camped over the winter there. If i recall it was around 25 bucks for the site. Somewhere they got it on the web, and you can make reservations, get info, etc.
