Scolymia cubesis maybe? I had bought two corals that looked very similar to that one and that's what they were sold as, unfortuantly both died due to shipping error.

my first thought when I saw it was scoly... but I am still not convinced it is a scoly... what about acan maxima?

Look at what this guy says about half way down this page... he has a skeleton and a picture of acan maxima that looks just like this coral...

there's no possible way its an acan maxima... they arent in circulation and wont be for a long long long long time. Theres another thread on this in the LPS ID forum... theres no way its an acan maxima just trust me on this one.

the skeleton looks like a scolly to me.

plus... you should play the lottery right now... this instant, if you got an acan max for $40.... cuz either the LFS lost a few zeros, or they happened to produce one out of thin air and wanted to make an easy sale.

For a coral that's not in circulation, there are an awful lot of them floating around! Here's an acan maxima FS, if anyone is interested:

And another one (maybe)

And another one...

I agree that that is more than likely a scoly, based mostly on size that it was at one time. The skeleton that it is sitting on was once it's own. You can follow the path of the coralites through the living flesh in this photo:

Not sure that you can say any coral is not in circulation, though.

Just my .02 cents...

I have two of these now, and they were sold to me as maximas. However, after researching, I have found that they are not maximas at all as maxima harvesting is yet illegal still (which I know means nothing in this hobby) but it doesn't fit the descriptions of maximas either. I don't know that it is a scoly as it looks lik n oscoly I have in my tank, and I have scolys of varying sizes and regions. They are beautiful and that was a great pick up. Enjoy

In the corals of the world books Veron said that there colors are green grey or brown?I am not saying that he is the final word but I am gonna say he knows more than most of us on this site. This discussion comes up from time to time and honestly I do not think that most if any of these are actually A Maximas.I hate to say it but this seems to be another way to make a little extra money off of a little extra hype!

What do you think it is then?

My 1st guess would be Scolymia sp. and my second would be Lobophyllia sp.I get some Indo corals that look like this from one of the older bigger wholesalers in L.A from time to time and they are labled as one of these two species,my rep at this wholesaler is always up in the air as to what species they are exactly(and he has done this for 10 plus years)? For 40.00 you got a good looking coral at a great price no matter how you look at it!!

just because someone is selling something as "acan maxima" doesn't actually make it so. distributors slap a name on something incorrectly all the time to make it sell

I think you are right... scolymia or lobophyllia

like some of us have said, there have been lots of threads on this, and the facts are always the same...

the only acan maximas are found in oman, and are illegal to harvest. oman is not giving us any... ever. even if it was an acan maxima, it would green or brown, and therefore not exactly desirable, which is ironic due to the fact that everybody seems to want them.

i still think you have a scollymia, but lobophyllia is also a good guess.

plus, there is no possible way you could get an acan maxima for $40, even if thats what it really was. sorry.
