Reflective eggcrate

I just took a bunch of the metalic looking( it's plastic) eggcrate from work, I've always used the white stuff, but is this ok to use in the tank? Wasn't sure if I could put it in the water

i believe someone has said that the metallic covering will eventually start chipping and peeling off and flying around your system.
