puffers will actually approach their size in the wild in aquaria. IJ don't know the max in captivity size, but even if you assume a mappa puffer will only achieve 60 percent of maximum size, it will still get close to a foot and a half long (maximum size listed in fish base is 65 cm).

I don't think a 175 is going to be nearly big enough to keep a puffer like this for life. I'd guess you need at least twice that much tank.

We have a local wholesaler here in town who has a two year old star and stripes puffer that is apporaching almost 3 feet long and he is probably every bit as 8 to 10 inches wide. I would say realisticy say he is 2 1/2 feet long. I was told believe it or not he was turned in by a guy who kept him in a 65 gallon tank and feed krill like 2 times a day and did masssive water changes. I don't know how much I believe that but that will tell you that they do get big in captivity. I have never seen one that big until then.

A 2-1/2'-3' long puffer!!! :eek1: WOW! I have never seen one that big. Imagine what those teeth can do when your doing maintenance in the tank! I thought about a puffer but now I'll reconsider...;)

I believe the porcupine puffer can grow past 18 inches!

i believe there was a video posted her a little while ago with a larger porcupine puffer.

even when not at full size, puffers can be massive because they are so thick. So a 10" puffer appears bigger than, say, a 10" tank. they are huge. I saw a 10" porc puffer in my LFS. I couldn't imagine it in my tank, even though I have other fish close to that size.

My friend has a stars and stripes puffer about the size of a football. He is great, he comes to the top of the tank whenever he sees my friend so he will rub his belly...

Yeah there are a few different kinds of porcs, one of which gets absolutely huge!
