I am setting up a new 90 gallon (36 x 24 x 25) and I will have a huge refugiuim (39 gallon) underneath.

I am looking for a recommendation for a skimmer.

I have been out of the loop for about 2 years now so any help would be appreciated.

I should be able to get an excellent skimmer for under $200.00

i.e., Reef Octopus ?

IMO one of the best bangs for your buck is the MSX 160/200. The 160 would be a fine choice. especially if one has limited space in their sump. The 200 would be ideal as it would handle a potential future upgrade in tank size. You wont find one new for under $200 however. The 160 is approx $270. maybe look in the used equipment forum

The Vertex 180 is a great skimmer as well. About $290 though. A Vertex 100 might be enough, but I would go with the 180.

+1 for the MSX 200. I hear nothing but good things about this skimmer. It's only $10 more than the MSX 160.

www.marinesolutionsinc.com (they're a sponsor.)

The MSX skimmers are essentially identical to the Octopus Extreme skimmers, to the point that they're made in the same factory.

Saltwater Connection also offers the same skimmers too under a different name. I believe pricing is similar.

at 200 your options are limited at 300 you have a few very good options.

i say +1 to the MSX200

Any restart issues with the msx? Is everyone recomending the cone or the regular cylinder?

Thanks to all replies:

I have ordered the Vertex.....

It was also recommended by a "sponsor" whom I called.
