View Full Version : Do I have Zoa eating Nudis? *PICS*

To preface the situation, I have a mixed colony rock in my tank, some green zoas, and what you would call "eagle eyes", along with a frag of "African Blues" and one other colony of blue zoas. Over the last week, all zoas aside from the AB's and the EE's haven't been opening much, if it all in the tank. I initially attributed this to replacing the way past due bulbs in my 4x39 tek (I AM running a shorter photo period during this time).
In any event...
Late last night, I was basking under the glorious glow of new actinic and blue+ bulbs when I a saw what looked like a crawling piece of star polyp or something similar....could it be....a nudi!?!?!??! I examined as best as I could before running through the house at 2:00am to find batteries for the cam so I could catch this guy.

After snapping the pictures, I promptly put on my rubber gloves and grabbed a turkey baster-esque device (kent squirt) and sucked him out on the second try.
I have also taken some photos of one of the affected colony (the green side of the combo rock) I was also curious if I had pox, as I can see some white spots - bare with me, I'm not much of a photographer. On the (mostly) affected side, I used the flash, so that might give you a better look. Can you see any eggs/pox?
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_mqBRZaVAX8A/SjETIwnYH-I/AAAAAAAAA1w/6td0Fl2q-pM/s800/colony1.jpg
And this is what it USED to look like (Green on the left side is what you are seeing in the above photo)

So, If they are nudis/pox, what do I do? I'm comfortable doing my own research, but if any of you zoanthid experts could chime in here, I would sure be appreciative.
Thanks!

You have a combination of best of the WORST WORLDS.
Pox and Zoanthid Eating Nudis.
For pox. Read this article and use tank water instead of RO/DI.
http://www.coralpedia.com/articles004.php
For Nudis, manual removal/dipping and try some wrasses.

:mad2: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
On a bright note, I'm glad I only have a few colonies and not a tank full of corals - I should be able to eradicate these pests with some luck. I wasn't planning on adding anything to the tank anytime soon (may be purchasing a house) but a wrasse may be in order. This is a 50g 36"x18" tank, would a lined wrasse do the trick? I'm a bit unfamiliar with the other wrasses that may assist with the nudis.
I'm never putting ANYTHING wet into my tank again without QT, period!!!!
Thanks for your quick response - I honestly appreciate it!

Ok, I've been reading a few threads on furan2 dips, etc.
When they are saying a "cup" do they mean like, an actual measuring cup? 1 packet/capsule of furan2 to 1 measured cup of tank water?
The reason I ask is this colony is on a big ol rock (which I was going to chisel down, but still a large colony).

Yes, 8 fluid oz reef water per packet. Mix up what you need to cover the affected area. In my own experience, for one larger colony of palys I needed to mix 3 packets with 3 cups reef water to submerge everything. Choose a container whose shape minimizes the amount of water needed (just larger than the affected piece).
The recommended amount of one packet per cup is a massive dose so it wouldn't surprise me if a lower concentration were also therapeutically effective.

I use a 5 gallon bucket. add 1- 1/2 gallon of tank water. and 1-2 packs of furan depending how much your dipping.
I usually do this when I'm about to do a water change. Kill 2 birds with one stone. Use the water that I'm taking out for the 5gal bucket and another 1 gal or 2 for rinsing.
As for wrasses, I'd go with a yellow coris. If you search a lot of post's here a lot have sucess with a yellow coris. Truely a work horse and doesn't bother anything.
You can also try a green seagrass, or other lined wrasses but those can get agressive if you put other wrasses in the the tank in the future. Manual removal and dipping is still best.

Thank you for that, Reef Bass. *edit, and Charles
Is it generally recommended to treat all zoas, even if you don't see the pox, or is there something else that I might dip them in as a preventative or therapeutic measure?
Basically, before I go running up to the fish store, and break this rock down to the smallest size possible (was going to split the rock anyway) is there anything else I should pick up, aside from the furan2?

If your treating seperately. You can also get Flatwormexit. some folks use that against Nudis.
Lugols/TMPCC/Revive is also great for dipping.

Well, after 3 hours and 120 miles! Help is on the way!
I bought all the Furan2 available within a 3 hours drive.

I was also lucky enough to score a yellow coris wrasse (and a few snails).

I know I said I would NEVER let anything wet into the tank without QT, but this is the first (and likely only) fish that will ever be in this tank, so if it winds up to be a bad decision, I only have 1 fish to QT  .
I'm going to continue doing some research on the amount of packets to water, but since I have 30 packets I have some breathing room if I end up making it too "lean".
Coris went right into the sand - gave me enough time to fit my eggcrate covers! Anyone know where to get that plastic mesh screen? it looks almost like net that is made with fishing line....
I'll try my best to keep the updates coming!

If your talking about these , then you can buy them online under pond netting, LOWES, HD and other places.
I got mine specifically a BAITCASTING NET. more expesive, but I figured it's used for small fish and doesn't hurt them

Coris are pretty good and resilient. They'll hide for a while when new, but when fully acclimated to the new tank they go all over the place and inspect all frags and even ones your putting in the tank and while it's still in your hands.

Charles,
That is exactly the stuff! Do you have any additional pics of how you have created your screen tops?
You have been a tremendous help and cannot thank you enough.

I use the following...
Screen be it insect netting or up to my bait casting net ( expensive ).
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=14706-55-3002209&lpage=none
Rollers to roll the holder and netting to the frame.
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=202-958-ROLLERKNIFE&lpage=none
To hold the screen to the frame.

This is what I use to hold the frame in each corner.

I'm getting ready to start my dips - can I treat all colonies in the same container, or do I need to do each in it's own dip?
