im in the planning stage of moving my sump to the basement and using a mag 9.5 to return the water. this pump has 3/4" outlet. the aquarium return is 3/4". would there be any benifit to upsizing the pipe between the pump and tank which will be 9' or 10' run?
thanks

yes, the bigger the pipe the less restriction and added flow. here is the head loss calc-

A mag 9 with 10ft head with .75" pipe is 330goh, with 1.5" pipe it's 405gph.

I believe Mag actually recommends upsizing the pipe size if I remember right. Its been awhile since I used one but I think the included literature said something about it.

I used larger pipe on my 9.5 I had before upgrading to a Eheim on my old 90g system

Larger Pipe will provide an increase in flow.

Thanks for the replies - I was thinking up sizing the piping would not matter due to the 3/4" restrictions @ the pump and at the DT.

Yes, but wouldn't upsizing your pipe cause increased beck pressure do to a larger water content?

i think there is a good medium between resistance and back pressure. you'll have to consider that too wide of a pipe with slow flow and too thin of a pipe will slow flow

How do we upsize the pipe? I have a MAG7 which is 3/4th inch outlet but I have a 1 inch tubing attached to it. Is this what everyone is talking about?

Larger pipe = more flow. Smaller pipe = less flow.
Yes, use whatever adapter to upsize the pipe that works for the application.

The new Mag 12 that I purchased didnt say anything about upsizing the pipe in the instructions....For pump returns with Megaflows or 3/4" bulkheads it would be kind of pointless to use a 3/4" from the pump and upsize, then decrease again at the bulkhead??

goffy, you will have 2 3/4" returns.

Loss is cumulative. Bigger pipe helps (a lot) despite discharge size and bulkhead size. You can also upsize above the bulkhead.

This is from the Mag9/12/18 instructions. Note the plumbing size.

How does wider pipe slow the flow?
