dying monti's and smelly water?

hi guys, i got a buddy, who's reef tank's water is smelly, not ocean smelly but a wierd kinda ranky smell, its not an ammonia smell either or sulfer. i think its some sort of baterial bloom. also his montipora'a are slowly dieing, all other corals look good, he lost a few colones already. he does regular water changes. anyone have any experience with this situation?

I would recommend a couple of larger water changes using fresh RO/DI water for the mix.

Not sure what could be causing the smell besides dirty water or dead critters.
