View Full Version : Will a MJ1200 work for a short sump return?

I am building a new stand for a 20g tank that I am putting a small sump on, and was wondering if a Maxi-Jet 1200 would work for the water return. I don't really care how fast the flow is, so long as it's strong enough to continuously work for the return.

The height would be no more than 36" most likely

Doubt it. Might try a mag3 or something along those lines.

It will absolutely work, I've used 1200's as returns on 20g - 50g tanks.

Right now I am using a MJ1200 for mine. Not the flow I want but will do until I find a pump. And mine is like 40"

Those pumps are bulletproof, of course they will work. Gotta love maxijets.

Just don't expect much height, or too much flow. But many advocate low flow anyways, and I have seen the 1200 recommended on low wattage setups that incorporate low flow sumps/refugiums, so meh... might just be the "best pump" in some reefers eyes.. :D

Thanks guys! This should work then, I just need a low flow, enough to move water from the tank to the sump and back.

Does the lower flow also help with lower noise (if using a bulkhead, not an overflow box)?

That it does my friend, I'm getting ready to switch mine over this week(end).

It will do all you need it to!

I've played with them as returns. The pump curve for an MJ1200 can be found online, if you search for "reef pump curve" for example.

At 3' roughly 175 gph, and at 4' ~125 gph.

That's actually more than I expected, driftin.

Thanks for all the help, folks!
