ok so I have a canopy that I built for my 500 gallon tank. I want to know if I can rest the canopy on top of the glass tank or should I be supporting it from the ceiling???

The tank dimensions are 8'x38"x30" and the canopy is just framed out of 2x4's

Thanks

Mine does. Most commercial canopies rest directly on the tank but most retail tanks have plastic trim to protect the tank a bit.

The tank should handle the weight fine.

My lights are very heavy- they are the aqua space light 2x250 with the ballast built into the fixture. Its between 60-80 lbs. It is currently hanging from wall supports, but I am going to build a canopy.

Can the tank (AGA 120) take this weight? Any ideas for the canopy to support it?

Yes the tank can support the wieght of the canopy.

If you really think about it, your 500 gallon tank is probably holding 2 tons of water, 300-500 pounds of sand, 500 pounds of live rock, and whatever else is in there.

Another 100 pounds or so is hardly going to matter much...
