View Full Version : Frag Mounting Experiment

Due to an accidental fragging I'm going to do an experiment to see which is the best way to mount corals. ReefWreck and many others told me that a coral does best when it has a large base to grow off of so mounting the coral sideways will expedite the growth of the base and then it will continue growing upwards and branching out in cool patterns.
Anyway the coral was mounted tonight 6/19 and I will post pics every week or two.
The coral is a tan digitata.
Ps. I know that the frags are a little different in size and may throw off the experiment but I wasn't going to break it again just in the name of being exact.

So, will the coral laying down fill out the plug first? what do you guys think?

the best way to frag it, is to tie it to a piece of monofilament, and place it in a white containor, so their is high reflectivity. (or mirror the sides of the tank)
but your experament will be cool too! lol

I meant to add that both corals will be next to each other on the same frag rack so all conditions will be equal.

Following along, there is a ton of information for fragging ideas like this here
http://www.garf.org/GLUE03/GLUESPECIAL.shtml
they show you many ways to frag for best growth and mounting sideways like you are doing, you can scroll down and read on that page or if you go to the side and click propagation and choose one of the sub menu's there is a TON of information, I think they actually recommend mounting sideways like that. Lots of good reading, but I am tagging along as well

ive had a lot of success with mounting frags on their sides, they encrust fully quick! The only downside is that you just can't put as many bigger frags as close together because the frag usually stick out past the frag plug. Try it!!!

That's funny, because I fragged a tan digitata the EXACT same way on 6/14. The frags are a lot smaller than yours, but I did lay them on their sides to see. I've seen several frag tank shots around here where folks had sps glued sideways, and thought maybe there was a good reason for it....;)
I'm tagging along to see.
