The Mystery Wrasse has been in quarantine for four weeks, and seems healthy and happy. I've got it acclimating to the angled tank now, and hope that it will enjoy its new home. I'm a bit concerned about the anemones, and hope it won't be an issue for this gorgeous fish.

The Mystery Wrasse did a good job avoiding the Rose BTA and the 27 mini carpet anemones. It's like a landmine in there and I can only hope it'll steer clear of those little guys. (I've been giving these to DFWMAS members that are part of the COOP (coral sharing program), so the risk factor is lessening a little bit.)

It did stay in the back of the tank, so this was the best shot I could get.

Mmm, RC lost my post!

Is this the thread where some reef nut has an aquarium in every room of his house, flooded his basement to act as a sump for all of them and stays up late at night answering posts?

;)

In two words? Awesome. Thanks.

melev
06/22/2009, 11:39 PM
No, that's some other reef nut. This one lives in Texas where basements are rare, it not non-existant. ;)

I do have a couple of tanks now... but I've got it under control. I don't have a problem. I can quit anytime. :D

Twelve Step Program for Marine Reef Addiction

1. Admit we are powerless over aquariums—that our lives have become unmanageable
2. Come to believe that nature is greater than ourselves and can restore our systems to sanity
3. Made a decision to turn our aquariums over to the will of nature
4. Made a searching and fearless inventory of left–over and un-used supplies
5. Admitted to ourselves, and to another human being, the exact nature of our addiction
6. Entirely ready to have nature, filters and water changes remove all defects
7. Humbly asked life fish stores to exchange and remove our shortcoming livestock
8. Made a list of all livestock we harmed and became willing to learn everything about them
9. Made direct appeals to fellow reefers for frags wherever possible
10. Continue to take inventory and when possible establish another aquarium system
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with nature as we understood it, praying only for knowledge of reefs and the power to re-create them
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to reef addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs

Hows the Mystery Wrasse doing? & did the RBTA split again?

People that aren't from Texas don't understand about the no basements here...LOL I was amazed when I moved to Texas that hardly any houses have them!

I think we all need the Twelve Step Program for Marine Reef Addiction here on RC!

The Mystery Wrasse is doing well, but seems a bit skittish in the angled tank. He/she (any way to sex these) jerks his head back and forth when I get close, which is strange since it didn't do that in quarantine.

The RBTA is just TDB (Too Darn Big) and the clowns are loving it.

Maybe the location of the tank, or the angles cause distortion, which in turn spooks the mystery wrasse -they are a more visual oriented fish by nature. I've had fish in a front hall before, that were always skittish (albeit freshwater), but we moved the tank to the livingroom, & they were fine. Glad he's ok. Yea, the RBTA - too funny, some people can't wait for them to get big & split, & yours won't stay small enough for the tank! LOL

Here's a shot of the new wrasse. He's still pretty skittish for some reason. I guess the angled slope from in there is less forgiving than a common rectangular box.

What I did with the people I shared them with is have them promise to never sell them. They can enjoy them all they want, and if they want to give a few away to another hobbyist, do so for free. Let's get these out to more people, without turning them into a LE name-brand coral.

Since we have enough of them as it is. ;)

melev
07/20/2009, 11:50 PM
When I bought it, it was (still is) a tiny fish. If it gets too big for the tank, I'll very likely move it to my 280g. For now, it seems like a perfect fit, and an interesting addition to that tank.

The RBTA has been burning a couple of SPS corals that I have 'aqua-magged' to the back panel of the tank. I keep trying to move them out of its reach... I'm going to have to move them to the main tank I guess.

melev i know this isnt the right thread but i cant find the other one. I had a question on the 2g pico tank you had, I would like to do the same exact thing, focus on zoanthids and such, petsmart has a 2.5G rectangle tank. My question is if you were to do it again what kind of lighting would you use? Would you use a Power Compact again? I even have some old hoods from 10G tanks that maybe i could gut out and use those florecents but im not sure.

Here are a few pictures from tonight. I think this tank needs a new bulb already, as the corals seem to really be lacking light. Then again, the RBTA is taking up a lot of real estate, casting shadows over stuff below.

I bought a new 14,000K Phoenix bulb from Marine Depot. I've only heard good things about this bulb for a long time now, and decided to try it over my little tank before caving in to going with T5s. I was thinking that the RBTA was a bit dull but now with the new light the tank really pops. Are you going to put your light sensor in to test the new bulb?

melev
09/19/2009, 05:15 PM
Yes, I'll measure the PAR after MACNA. This light is only on for 6 hours a day, and it usually takes 100 hours to burn a bulb in.

Btw, this bulb has a little nipple on the OUTER section of the glass, and the instructions stated to point this protrusion upwards, which I did.

I'm running a Phoenix 14k over my 12g, and absolutely loved the color output, after six months however, I keep wanting to go bluer, do you have any recommendations for a 20k?

melev
09/19/2009, 07:17 PM
The Radium 20,000K has been around a long time. Recently, IceCap started making 20,000K bulbs and I really like how crisp blue it is. However, that is a 400w SE bulb and what I used over the center of my 280g.

Bmgrocks
09/19/2009, 07:58 PM
How would you compare the Pheonix 14k to the Radium? do you have a preference between the two thus far?

Keep giving the bulb some time, as you know it really does take around 100hrs of burn time to show the true color. The pic's relly make the bulb look bluer than they really are.

I decided to pull out the Apogee meter anyway, even though it is way premature. Might was well see what the numbers are now versus 100 hours from now, right?

I got a few measurements and then suddenly the meter reads "Error 4" and won't work anymore. I guess I need to ship it back to Apogee to find out what's wrong with it, because I can't find any help in the booklet nor on their site. :(

Before it broke, I got these measurements:

944 - at the surface, sensor above the water line (bulb 6" from the water)
680 - at the surface, sensor just under the water's surface
302 - at 6" beneath the water line
160 - at 12" beneath the water line
85 - along the front of the tank (to be expected)

It was around 225 or so in the center of the RBTA before the meter failed. :(

No, this tank has no top, and that Wrasse hasn't tried to jump yet. He likes to stay low in the tank, which isn't helpful for picture taking in this particular tank. The sloped front makes it hard to focus on him (or anything).

I don't know yet. This is the first few hours I've ever run a 14,000K.

Additionally, I've only used SE 400w Radium bulbs in the past. XM 20,000K bulbs are nice, but I've not had any in a few years. I really liked their color. The IceCap 20,000K looked fantastic, but stopped working after 48 hours; I got another one from them, and it didn't last longer than the first. Too bad, that color was popping. I don't know if I got two bad bulbs in a row (bad luck?), but didn't try a third time.

Comparing a 150w DE bulb to any of the 400w SE bulbs I've used in the past doesn't seem practical, so the answer is: I don't know. Yet.

It's really to the point that I'm just letting the RBTA take over the tank, and whatever survives wins. I've said it often: this tank would be just as pretty with only the anemone, the rock it is on, some sand and the clownfish. I need to completely abandon the idea of adding anything else to it.

Marc, what do you call those drain hoses (black and white) that you used on your build? Where can you get them?

Thanks.

This is SpaFlex tubing, which can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowes, or online. Savko sells the black version, which looks nicer to me. You glue it into regular PVC fittings with a primer/solvent mixture similar to PVC, but you do want to make sure it is made for SpaFlex tubing.

I like it because you reduce the amount of fittings needed, and it also reduces vibration sound when connected to a pump.

That tank is GORGOUS! I was thinking of turning my solana to an all nem and clownfish tank. I saw a local reefers that had about 8 nems of all different colors and species and the clownfish just surfed from one to another. BEAUTIFUL!

I'd like to add a different colored BTA to this tank if it becomes BTA only. Which is rather tempting. I've got a source for a green one with orange tips, and I think the contrast would be incredible.

I was going to suggest the orange tip. that would be a great addition.

It's a useful tool, but nothing amazing. Having fully charged batteries definitely makes a difference. It'll get the detritus out of my sump, which is why I wanted to buy it.

As long as they can handle the lighting in that tank, that's fine with me. The anemone can create some mean shade throughout the day, and there's only a single point of light currently. That being said, I've had zoas in this tank since the beginning, and for the most part they have held their own.

The foot doesn't move, but the section you see tends to stretch out significantly.

Has the mystery wrasse faired well in the smaller tank?

melev
11/21/2009, 12:15 AM
It's doing fine in there Korrine. It eats the pellet food I offer daily, which is Reef Nutrition's AquaThrive. The clowns eat it, and really that is all the food that tank gets.

This system is tied into the 280g reef and my suncoral tank, so I'm sure some food (or fish poo) makes it into the 20g angled tank, but the one pinch a day of pellets seems to do just fine. This tank is now over two years old, since it was set up in July 07.

Check the first couple of pages of this thread ( in the first section, this is the 2nd section due to the split), and you'll see how I tied it in. I think it was January of this year that I added a Dart pump that feeds a manifold to a variety of things in my sump, and that same pump feeds the angled tank. That white tube heading to the right is the one I'm talking about.

If you have a sump, and your nano is drilled to drain to that sump, and your sump can hold the water from both tanks in the event of a power outage, I don't know why you couldn't do so. ;)

that is one awesome nano!

Thanks!

Red Sea Skimmer? I remeber you having a ER, how do you like it?

I ran the RedSea C-skim 1200 for a few months to see how it worked, but my main Euro-Reef CS12-2 has been running under my reef since 2005. It does a good job.

The C-skim works fine, provided it is set up with the right sized tank. Anything under 100g would probably be good.

Yeah awhile ago reefcentral went down for over 5 hours, there were rumors circulating that the site got hack, but it just turned out to be a glitch in the upgraded source code (for updating the site). A very emotional time period for all rc-withdrawal reefers ;). Anyway I have been off RC for awhile ever since Exams came around... anyway its nice to have time to browse the reefs! By the way, any update on Reefcast? I have been checking the site frequently and no knew podcast(s). I know you guys have busy schedules so you have my condolences, but I really can't wait for the next one!
