I have been previously using the Dr F&S Phospure. Tonight I used the BRS pellet GPO for the first time, and I like it already. The Phospure took a ton of flushing before it ran clear. It seemed like I would lose 1/2 of it by the time I was done flushing. The BRS is WAY better in this regard. It took very little flushing at all to run clear.

I might have to try changing my media as well, I am hearing more and more good about brs gfo..

Sounds good Scott. Keep us posted on how effective it is over the next month or so. :)

I was also shocked at how little it needed to be rinsed. But i am using the high capacity granules. And it works great.

Ive been using it for over a year with very good results in a TLF reactor..

I like both the pellets and the high capacity.

How did you like DFS Phospure? Any reason for switching to BRS GFO?

I used the BRS gfo for about 1.5 years with great results. I test my reactor effluent to know when to change the gfo, and usually got about 140 days it.

I recently got some RowaPhos real cheap, so I'm testing it. I don't like the dificulty in fluidizing it.

As in the original post, I didn't like how much flushing it needed. I bet I would lose 20 - 25% of the media just to make it run clear. The BRS, almost no flushing.

The other thing was once it was flushed, it was hard to get it to fluidize well. It would just sit there, then add just a bit more flow and a plume of GFO dust would rise. The BRS, I can easily get it to just have a light tumble on the surface.

what technique are you using that actually loses media rinsing? I use Pura Phoslock which also requires lots of rinsing but I never lose any. you dont use any barrier (place it in the reacto, media bag) before rinsing?

Is the DFS stuff just as effective at removing phosphates as the DD stuff?

Its not techpure. Dr F&S Phospure.

The technique is put the media in the BRS reactor and flush SW through at a low flow till it runs clear. Same technique as I use for the BRS. There are two foam barriers at the top of the reactor. The foam is not fine enough to keep the GFO fines from passing through.

IDK about effectiveness. I just started using the BRS.

I've been using the BRS HighCapacity GFO for over a year, and it's worked out well with a little bit of dust. I refuse to rinse my media first though, as everyone says that there are phosphates in tap water, and why would I waste the media that I paid for by rinsing it out first (and that I'm too lazy to go through all that work of getting it cleaned.) I guess I could hook it up to ro/di water to rinse, but again, too much work.

I haven't had any problems, and have been very happy with my GFO experience. I stopped recently because I've started dosing carbon with some zeo rock too.

To rinse it you justy hook up the reactor in your tank and have the output go into an empty milk jug or something until it runs clear. I also do a water change when I change my media. Although it used to take like 3-4 gallons for ROWAphos to run clear, and takes less than 1 gallon for the BRS HC.

I've tried all 3 BRS products and like the pellets best as well. Better capacity and less rinsing.

How do you use the pellets? In the filter sock? I have my reactor with rowaphos

I used BRS gfo pellets in MESH bag and placed top of filter in my biocube 29

It works awesome.

It need some high flow.

I was surprised... from .15 to .04 in 27 hours!!

I used Hanna checker phos.

I do see SPS starting to color up and open up more polyps.

One caution is use less than what BRS recommended.
