do you guys use snails and hermits for alge controll and for the uneaten food.

It all depends on the fish that you have in there. Since I had triggers and puffers they usually did not last too long in my tank.

I have cowries and a HUGE hermit in my tank with a trigger, emperor angel, foxface and damsel. Since purchasing the crab my sand is pristine. He's big enough that no one bothers him and he leaves the fish alone. The cowries' shells are usually to hard for predators to crack.
