View Full Version : Mg at 1700.....problems?

Would a magnesium level of 1700 causes problems with SPS?

My SPS certainly have fading issues anyway, and have for some time. Everything else is rock solid.

No idea why my magnesium level is so high. I have both Elos Mg kits....the one step....and the two step versions. Both test different results (one step is 1400 and the two step is at 1700). I tested twice just for consistency, and the results were the same.

Next step will be for me to test my salt mix.

i raised my mag to about 1800 to kill briopsis(which it did), and observed no noticable effects on my sps.

Huh? An oversized skimmer isn't really going to have anything to do with elevated magnesium levels... Are you using Oceanic salt by chance?

I think you misread my prior post.

I was dismissing the magnesium concern and placing possible blame on my oversized skimmer as a possible reason why my SPS are not faring better. I have an ATB Medium cone with an airstar pump. I used to have it on my 120g reef, but then remodeled my home and put in a new 85g tank. SPS gotta eat. Going to try running it only during the day.

I use Tropic Marin Pro salt. Interestingly, my Elos Mg test kits (I have both stage 1 and stage 2 kits), test Tropic Marin at 1400 mg and 1600 mg, respectively. I believe it's supposed to test at about 1350, so I'm thinking the Stage 1 kit is actually more accurate. I've done a few large water changes on this tank and have added no supplemental magnesium, yet it remains high according to Elos testing. I'm thinking there's probably nothing wrong with my magnesium level whatsoever.

I am trying to use Tech M to kill some hair algea. I accidently got my mag up to 2400. Fish are fine, but the snails are toast. Luckily it is just my 28g nano tank at work. The hair algea does not seem affected. 1700 should be fine.

I've tried many things to control a small algae outbreak and was left with a few clumps of bryopsis. Brought MG up to 1600 with mag cloride but the bry held on. Tech M at 1600-1700 took out the bryopsis. One of my acros seems a little stressed, but otherwise, all is well.
