i curently have 4 tanks all freshwater, i collect exotic fish, but would like to switch over to saltwater! i was wondering if there was a way i could use my fluval fx5 and a good protein skimmer as a filter source instead of a sump, or wet dry? if so is there a a canister and skimmer you have in mind that will work? i would like to have a fish only with live rock tank. im not ready for reefs yet! thanx

canister is not necessary if you have enough live rock. over time the canister will start causing you more problems then its worth.

but you can use it as a reactor of some sort......carbon, FO (ferric oxide), etc.

First i would look into a sump at least 30g or bigger

The only thing the fx5 would be good for is to run carbon and some phos remover...

as far as a skimmer something rated for over 100g like the vertex IN 180

if its gonna be fish only the lights you have on it right now should suffice (you can change bulbs you make the colors of the fish pop more). sump can be constructed on your own out of acrylic or you can purchase a used/new tank that fits under your stand. but for a sump an overflow system will be in order. either hob overflow box or drilling your tank. i personally prefer your tank being drilled. for the skimmer i would look into something rated at least 200 gal if you are tight on budget. but a properly sized skimmers for your size tank are never cheap.

besides that you would need to get all the other crap like recirculation pumps, powerheads maybe a couple of nice koralias or modded maxijets. if you want some chemical filteration with carbon and or FO. maybe an ATO system, chiller if needed.

I have seen people use fx5 to run a fish only tank with combination of live rock in the tank and a good skimmer- not sure how effective though
