Do you all trim them down and make frags of the clippings or what?

Clipping them is an option. If you don't the coral will just spread out horizontally. If this is not a bad thing then let it go if you want to. The coral will tell you if it has to be clipped. You can also sometimes remove the whole coral and clip off part of the base and then re-attach it in the same spot with new room for growth upwards. :)

if you don't prune them back, the coralites will flatten out, and then grow a scummy/slimy algae at the surface.

it's a little hard to see, but the tips of the bali slimer are all flattened out (damn thing grows too fast)

That's nuts. Is that a frag system? Shallow tank? Plastic bin? Can't tell. Don't get me wrong, it's incredible, it just left me a little vexed as to what I was looking at. SPS growth can never be insulted, so please don't take offense.

Oh and BTW, if you shave Chuck Norris's beard, instead of a chin you'll find yet another fist. Jesus walked on water. Chuck Norris swims thru land.

no worries and no offense taken. it's just a pic i had at hand of one of our coral troughs that shows what acropora do growing at the water's surface (only 16" deep).

OOOHHH--an sps Pond:D

I can see the tips coming out. Is it better to frag them down or what in your opinion.

frag them off and give them away to local reef fellows.

when i read this thread i thought of a tank that i once saw a pic of with acros growing out of the water. it looks like thats the same frag tank i was thinkin of! lol

I would remove some underlying rockwork to get the coral sitting lower in the tank. That way you don't have to mess with the coral itself, and you can end up with nice large colonies.

Hey if your willing to give frags away are you willing to ship them?

not to go off topic or anyhting. That trough is incredible! and you have more than one? how do you get that kind of growth?

EDIT: I just noticed your in syrecuse, I am in Plattsburgh, PM me if you have any frags to get rid of, either free or otherwise.
