I was wondering if anyone has successfully kept a fish long-term in a 5.5gal? Mine has 72watt PC (my old biocube29 lighting), a 2-chamber false corner overflow with LR rubble/chaeto in the first and a mini-jet 606 and 25 watt heater in the 2nd. Other than a couple of snails it's doubled as a frag tank while I've been waiting to decide on a suitable fish. My first choice would be a pistol/goby pair either yasha or red-banded. Does anyone have experience with these in a 5.5 long-term?

I had a yellow watchman goby in a 5.5 for about 6 months. I got tired of manually topping the tank of and he now inhabits my 120 tank. I don't know if that would be considered long term.

I had a Coralife PC light a few chucks of LR and some sand, zoas zenia that type of thing. Also kept a few snails and hermit crabs in the tank.

Did a WC every week about half a gallon from the large system I have.

Most smaller gobies should do well as posted above. A rainfords goby might also be a good choice.

The coolest fish hands down for a 5.5 nano would be a Spikefin Goby. I just saw one today that was like 1/2" and I think they max out at 1 - 1 1/2". Very pricey at $100 to $160 but a sweet fish.

I had a watchman goby /pistol shrimp combo for about three years. The goby was good sized when I got it so I have no idea how old it was. But it stopped coming out to eat and finally just disappeared. I like to think it died of old age.

I still have the pistol shrimp a year later but instead of a goby I added a yellowtailed damsel. It's grown very little, and adds color and activity to the tank. As a solitary fish in a 5.5 I would highly recommend it.

(Disclaimer, they supposedly grow to 3" but I've never seen one even half that big)
