I don't believe that they are reef safe.

In my experience they are (this particular one anyway - I think THL got it from me) reef safe, but will eat ornamental shrimp and small snails and crabs. I kept it well fed and he didn't bother the snails and crabs, but I didn't keep shrimp in that tank.
