That's a great question! How would you even go about estimating that number?

Variables like people leaving the hobby, returning and those that are just starting make it difficult to even estimate.

i do belive that the no. of members in Reef Central and other forums can give an estimation
my estimation is that we have something like 100000 -200000
or maybe i'm mistaken

Pretty amazing number when you think about it.

in the members list we have more than 188000 members if we assume that 40-50% left or just joined without having a tank we still have about 100000 + about 50000 that are not members we'll reach about 150000
does it make any sense?

i dont think as many reefers as you think are on this forum. Im the only one on here of the 6 people i know personally that are into this stuff.

You are probably looking well past triple the # of users on here, just for the # of people into the hobby. Number of actual tanks would be even greater.

and you don't leave RC... it's a list of everyone that has ever joined. If you look at everyone on the list many are spammers or people that never posted. Others have not posted in years. THen there are plenty of folks who keep tanks and have never heard of RC. There are dozens of reef forums out there. So basically we can try to estimate or we can pull a number out of the air.... either way is probably wrong :D

This economy has knocked out at least 10% around here.

maybe it will give us an idea..........

in Germany for instant I belive we have about 400000 of marine tanks

so the number of 200000 looks low and we can look at numbers of 300000 as real

this is really amazing numbers

well
since it became a kind of obsession to find out some real numbers
that's what I found during my digging

not 200000 and not 300000 we're 1000000.........  :bounce3:

This number makes way more sense to me.

I don't think a majority of people who keep marine tanks are members here. Too bad though because most of them could learn a lot and save a lot of livestock from joining.

100000!!! That's a lot! Imagine if we take the average electric consumption of 500w per tank, the total wattage would be..........?

and how many qubic feet of reef would there be?

Just as a WAG, 1 million tanks, lets say 75 gallons per tank on average, that gives us 75,000,000gallons. That gives us 10,026,041 cubic feet.

That would equal one tank 6 tenths of a mile long, 6 tenths high and 6 tenths deep.

I think PC's would be fine and no you still can't keep a tang. LOL

And its still not enough room to keep that Damsel from being a PITA
