Ok, i've been sold to the idea of getting just a few cured fiji rocks and putting them in my tank and then get a bunch of base rock and let it slowly cultivate.

I don't know much about base rocks, so ...is it much denser than fiji rocks? I dont want to minimize as much as possible to the weight of the tank. It currently sits in the living room and on the first floor right next to the wall.

How much base rock should i get to have it cultivate fast enough? I'll go ahead and just get the cured rocks tomorrow and place them in the tank... do you have to wash or cure base rocks too? Where are base rocks from? thanks!

AquaWave,

I've been following yoor posts today. I have one idea for you to consider. Slow down. Seriously, you have a wonderful resource here at Reef Central. You need a complete plan for your tank before you start investing in equipment and livestock. Otherwise, you will waste as much money as I did my first year in the hobby. The only piece of equipment that made it through my first year was the tank and stand. Oh, and one heater. You need to take a step back and figure out what kind of tank you want, you need to develop an equipment plan, and you need a stocking plan. The slower you go now, the more success you will have. Start with a written plan and seek input from RC. If not, I can sell you an undergravel filter for cheap.

And most important, read and re-read WaterKeepers "New-First Time on RC-Look Here for Answers" at the top of the thread list.

EverettReef makes a very important point. Nothing good happens fast in this hobby. Trying to hurry along nature's processes will result in failure. It is exciting to get started, and I'd encourage you to keep reading as much as you can, but slow down and take one step at a time. Patience is not only a virtue in reef keeping, it is a requirement.

Base rocks can be any type of rock it is just not cured. Normally has been set out for a while and has dried out. Everything dead on it.
Since it is not cured, it is cheeper. By using some base rock and some live rock you can save some money. The live rock will seed the base rock and the base rock will become live. Drawback is it can take time for the base rock to become live.
I know your next question is how long.
Depends on LR to BR ratio.
How good the LR was
Lots of other things.

Same thing can be done with sand. Use Dry sand for most of your sand and seed it with a few cups of Live sand from a fellow reefer.
