I fed my tank earlier tonight and his eyes were bigger than his stomach - he ended up eating a big piece of Rod's food. He then retreated to his cave and started acting a little weird, but I didn't think much of it. Then 3 hours later I found him on his side gasping for breath on the substrate. I even tried giving him the heimlich maneuver: I grabbed him and gently pushed up on his belly. But to no avail, nothing came out and he kept sinking and getting swept up in the current. I decided to end his pain early :(

RIP 'Perky' - You will be missed . . .

Wow....i wish i could say its a first. That stinks.

Btw, for those reading. If you have to euthanize a fish, either use scissors/knife just behind the brain and severe the spinal cord or mix up a super strong saltwater solution (6X NSW). Either one will do the trick, the first will be instant.

I had to "dispatch" a fish recently, I read to add vodka to the water their in and then freeze them. Does that sound reasonable?

Not at all because vodka lowers the temp the water will freeze at just water in the freezer...

clove oil and a freezer is the most humane method

After I added the vodka, the fishs rate of resperation slowed to nothing. Then I put him in the freezer. I hope I did the right thing to put him down.
