I have removed most if not all of my live rock in my 120g tank due to an algae invasion and also to get rid of those crab and fire worm I'd found by accident. The tank now contain only sand and my live stock of fishes, some zoos and xenia. It's has been this way for more than 6 month and of course I am not happy with the look. I am however planning to place artificial live rock, made of fibreglass into this tank. My idea is to have something similar to those reefer that have those minimalist aquascaping tank.

Since there are no live rock to host the bacteria, could I use biohome as a replacement ? This is the product that I am talking about.

Could I use a media reactor to house the biohome ? What kind of flow should I use for this setup ? I have an Eheim 1046 as a spare pump, should I use that or find a higher capacity pump? I do not want to dump the biohome into the sump as it would be messy and might trap the detritus around it.
