Maintenance
Water Changes I try to do a 20% water change every other week. I recently purchased an Air Water & Ice RO/DI unit for all my water change and top-off water. Before that I used the grocery store "Water Island" for 2 years without a problem.

Salt Reef Crystals mixed to 1.025

AdditivesNone. I have a two part solution but I haven't been using it.

TestingNone. I don't use test kits, and I never have with any of my tanks. I am not suggesting that people do this, its laziness not pride. I do constantly monitor temperature and regularly check specific gravity with a refractometer.

FeedingEvery 2-3 days. I feed my tank a variety of food including cyclopeeze, table shrimp, krill, flake food, Microvert, seaweed pellets, mysis. I usually soak the food in a garlic solution before feeding it to the tank. For the most part I do not spot feed anything in my tank.

Disasters
May 2009
I came home one night from work at 2:00am to find my tank a complete disaster. The silicone on my sump and failed causing all the water in the sump to pour out onto my carpet. This caused my ato to kick on pumping 5 gallons of fresh water into my tank, and then eventually back onto my floor.

By the time I got home my tank was 72 degrees with a specific gravity of 1.019. The sump and all my pumps in it where running dry, and all the liverock was also without water.

I spent the next 12 hours cleaning up water and taking down my tank so I could clean under it. My tank spent the next month on my floor while I tried to clean everything up. I also was forced to develop a completely new sump design because the store bought 10G tanks have changed dimensions and none of them would fit my stand.

This is what my corals looked like the morning after the disaster:
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m102/uwwmatt/IMG_5965.jpg

This is basically what my tank/apartment looked like for the month of May.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m102/uwwmatt/IMG_5961.jpg

However, there was a silver lining in all this. Taking my tank apart allowed me to fix some problems and improve on some of my original designs. I redoubled my efforts and finally got around to painting my return plumbing (which I also had to redesign for the new sump). I bought sound proofing material and totally sound proofed my stand. I fixed some of the issues with my sump design extending one of the chambers. I also made several big ticket purchases including a vortech MP20, RO/DI, and Reefkeeper. Finally I was able to completely change the aquascape in my tank to what you see today.

This nTOTM means a great deal to me because I have really been putting in a lot of hard work after what happened in May. I honestly almost gave up. Thank you all for voting for me, and please feel free to ask me any questions you have. I will be posting more pictures soon.

Thanks,
Matt

Very nice tank. It is not too common to see a 25 tall aga as a reef tank. I think you did a great job aquascaping. Great composition and mix of corals.

Well done uwwmatt - great looking tank, with a great write up.

I hear you about the fiance and tank situation... I've managed to have 1 tank burst, and flooded our old apartments on more than one occasion, ha ha. couldn't have been that bad though, we're now married ...hoping to raise the 'upgrade' question with her soon...

really like the tank matt. I like to see other people out there with the same kind of "hands off" aproach to testing and maintaining their tanks. Yours is proof that it can work.

Great looking tank sir, well done.

Couple of Q's..

What type of overflow are you using, what return pump and do you have a top down shot of the sump in the stand and associated plumbing?

I have the exact same tank stand combo and am thinking of making some radical changes soon.

Overflow: "Quietflow" with the intake basket painted black.
Return Pump: Mag 5

Here is the design of my new sump:

I just use flexible tubing to run from the overflow into my sump.

This was my original sump design when I had a tank that fit in my stand.

*I changed the design a bit from the schematics. I flipped baffles so the 3 where on the same side as the return pump.

Well, I should have asked for more !

How much evaporation do you get with the set-up today, and how do you top off with that size return section?

Feel free to ask as many questions as you have.

This past week I have been going through about a gallon of evaporation a day. Most of that is because the temperatures have been in the high 70s and low 80s so my tank fans are running constantly. I think if I where running the air conditioner in the house it would be closer to 5G per week give or take.

I have a 5G salt bucket that I painted black and set next to my tank. This holds my freshwater. It is hooked up to a Tsunami ATO which keep the water level constant. I have one of those 5G water cooler jugs that I also keep filled in the closet then I can just refill the reservoir when it gets low. Right now I am making freshwater once a week.

Here are some pictures of the setup:
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m102/uwwmatt/layout.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m102/uwwmatt/buckets.jpg

My new sump design has a much larger return section. The original design was on the small side, and if you didn't have a ATO you would be constantly topping it off.

Yes, one day after five months it just disappeared from its hole. I never got a chance to see its body though. From its while I could only see the top of its head and its little claws. I was never able to identify it.
