What do you use to hold your socks up?
your filter socks? ;)
I am trying to come up with a non-metallic object or device that will hold filter socks to the 90 degree tubing...
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff125/lightsluvr/fs1.jpg
I am sure I am trying to re-invent the wheel, and some other genius reefer has already solved this issue...
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff125/lightsluvr/fs2.jpg
No I can't use a sock holder due to space and access issues... just looking for something to hang onto the pipe...to keep my socks up... :D
Any suggesttions?

get small length of acrylic rod use plastic zip ties to hold to down pipe heat tubing bent in to a U shape hang sock. (heat and bend before putting on pipe) good luck

I'm trying to envision a way to use zip ties without it looking all kluged up... perhaps using two ties laced through the plastic "brace" on the sock's rim?
Anybody have a picture of how they use zip ties?
Thanks.

You can find holders like these almost anywhere

Thanks...but due to access, pipe positioning and other restrictions, I can't use these holders... (It's a long story) ;)

What about cutting a sideways "L" into the pvc so the half ring in the sock will slide in and hook on--removal would be a snap. You could barb the cut on the pvc too.
You could also bond on a "J" hook at the bottom of the pvc.

Is there a small plastic J-hook commercially available out there? I've seen the big ones - but this would only need to be about 1/2" or so to grab the little "brace" on the sock...

Here's my idea, with an illustration
...When the chime sounds, turn the page...
Take a ziptie, string, chain, underwear elastic, whatever, and route it like the blue line is in the pic. The red hook, so brilliantly created by my paint skills, is a plastic hook epoxied to your pipe running into the 90* bend. I would think this would do the trick, right?
You could even make a V guide on the apex of the 90* to keep the tie from slipping left and right, or maybe use an eyelet

Using zipties seems like a lot of working these things, considering you should change them a couple times per week. The holding hook seems like a great idea, depending on your plumbing.
I dont have a picture of what I did, and it was copied from another reefer, but I took a piece of 4" pvc, about 20" high, and drilled one inch holes all in various places.
If you then put in a 4" PVC coupler, you will find that most 4" socks will fit in there perfectly. the Coupler is on top, and the the holes are towards the bottom. This allows for easy access and then you overflow pipe is held in there and is pretty stable. I also made sure that some of the bottom had slotted areas so that no buildup of debris would take place on the bottom of the holder.
I use that spa hose (not spa flex) for my overflow so its easy to move around.

Zip tieing a sock closed can get you in trouble. If the sock clogs up the water will not be able to pour out of the top of the sock which can lead to an DT over flow.

that's the sort of hook I had in mind....

If you are doing the hook, you may want to make sure and get PVC, I think acrylic has a hard time with the bond and may snap off sooner, rather than later...

You are absolutely correct - I just used a piece of plastic I had laying around for the "prototype" (for my patent application - JK)
I'll search the hardware stores for something made from PVC that will work...
Fun.

Plastic cloths hanger.... snip off a long stright peice.....heat over stove slowly. do not try for the already bent par thinking you can make just one bend. I tried many times and it keeps snapping in the wrong spots. It takes time to heat the middle/center part of the hanger if you go to fast, you just melt it, so, take your time. When it becomes pliable, turn on water faucet, run only the very tip under cold water to harden, bend to shape and run complete bend under water to cool.....whala. I had no room and made an S shape, its awsome but takes a hanger or two for practice. I have 2 of them for my two socks.

What I did on mine was to stick a self-adhesive acrylic utility hook (you can get a 3-4 pack of these for a couple of dollars at most any wallmart/target/etc.) to the pipe, and then secure it with a couple of zip-ties. It's been holding up 4" filter socks for a few months now with no problems.

Good on ya, George! I didn't think of that. Why over-engineer when yours works easier/better.

How about a drip tray made of egg crate? I think it might just be easier to not use filter socks.

I forgot to answer this part.
Can you believe they're going to turn me loose in a jet in about 2 years? They're actually going to let me tell the pilots where to take their multi-million dollar jets! Joke's on them, right? :p
I'll be glad to post this in your thread if you'd like. You can feel free to copy and paste anything I post anywhere too. I put it in the public eye to be used for at least a laugh, so once it's out there it's fair game.
Congrats on the safe and dry fresh water tests, btw!

Pull the airline clip/cup out of one of the standard suction cup airline holders. Superglue this to the elbow, facing out at a 45 with the cup opening side to side. Drill two small holes on each filter sock, about the diameter of airline hose. Cut a small piece of airline, push each end through the filter sock frame holes you drilled. Then just hang it off the superglued airline clip/cup. Adjust the filter sock height by adjusting the amount of airline that sticks through the holes in the filter sock frame.

After weighing many options, I went with the adhesive hooks from Wal-Mart. They come six to a package, exactly the number I needed. After using the adhesive at hold the hook to the pipe, I then tie-wrapped the hook securely to the pipe. They work great, and it is easy to remove to change socks, and I think the hooks will stay attached.
Thanks for all the tips.
