I have lots of them and have yet to see them eat any polyps or corals. Perhaps I am just the lucky one though.

they just eat film bacterias and cruise around the tank, there are a type that eat polyps but from what i understand they are extremely rare

^ they are not rare at all (or maybe i'm just one of the unlucky one's), I have had many different types of asternia in my tank, most harmless grazers, some that munch zoas, even some that eat SPS. There is no real way of knowing which is which except to look where they hang out. I will say that the ones I have caught eating corals have been alot darker in color but this is not for sure the way to tell.
I play it safe and just remove all of them.
