Is your tank covered? With what? They are prolific jumpers!!

Covered fully with egg crating.... He dove right down to the bottom of the tank on introduction...

I had my whole back covered except a quarter size hole----he threaded the needle.

Look behind your tank in the floor....:(

They easily get through egg crate, I would look on the floor as well.

Egg crate will not keep them in.

Add one more vote for carpet surfing. Hope not though; jawfish are neat...

If you have sand in your tank, look for some mounds. I've had mine for over a week now and the only reason I know he's there is the fresh sand mounds. I hope he eventually becomes bold enough for me to enjoy.

Good news!!! Just did some flashlight surfing and found him in a little cave dug out... Threw some food down there thinking he would come out, but he didn't bite...

It's good to hear that you found him, and hopefully he will start eating soon. Please keep in mind that if the holes on the egg crate are not covered, sooner or later, he will jump.

These are on my do not buy list ... could never get one to eat. Couldn't get pearly to eat either. And it isn't like they have to look very far.... my sandbed is churning with worms, copepods, amphipods, etc....

Best of luck. And get some mesh and some zip ties for that eggcrate!

Mine would take hikari S pellets one at a time from the end of a turkey baster--it's the only way it would get to the bottom with the tangs.

The jawfish would put its mouth around the entire tip and eat it when it came out.

It made quite a mess with the sand and shells I got him though. My brains stayed dusted.

I would blow a cloud of Rod's food right at them. They just buried.

I did have a jawfish briefly until he committed hari-kari but I did notice and verified online later that the tunnel thing is quite extensive. Mine actually made 2 tunnels in different locations that he periodically bounced from until he liked one all the time. Also it was at least a week before he started coming out to feed and even then he did so when the fish were on the other side feeding so he didn't feel threatened. They also can see movement outside the tank and immediately go back in as you approach them unless you stay still for a period of time. Really cool to watch while they maintain their den though.

its best to QT these guys for at least 3 weeks to get them to start eating. I have had 3 and all of them took a few days to start eating but once they got used to it, they are pigs! The one in my tank now comes out of his cave ALL the time and just swims around or hunts for food.

GL with getting yours to eat
