Jesse, they are all spectacular. The red bug in the first one is so cute, I can just seeing it come to life, like on a movie screen and saying "one foot in front of the other, but which other one?"
The frog in comparison with the clover flower. Really shows how small it is. And, the first dragonfly in the second set of pictures. Looks like a Tiffany stained glass insect. They're really wonderful.
Thank you so much, Jan

For all of mine, no tripod really. On a normal shot, there's no time. A monopod may work sometimes, but I'm looking into one. Have been for a while. I do use a remote shutter release. I also have a minipod that I use for added support. The legs rest on the upper part of my chest. Right hand on the base of the pod. Top portion of the camera resting on my forehead. It helps, but you have to be careful with breathing.

Z.X, is that a hummingbird moth?

That's a neat catepillar you found there Jesse. Impress us with your knowledge and tell us what kind of butterfly / moth it will be when it undergoes metamorphysis and emerges from its chrysalis.

Here's my contribution. For the record, I don't consider spiders bugs because bugs are insects, phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta, whereas spiders, while still phylum Arthropoda, are class Arachnida.

Yea, um, It's a, I really don't know. I've been looking at some sites for it, but no luck yet. Nice spider too!!!

And I do think that's a hummingbird moth. I've never seen them in my area. We have the Clearwing moth around here though.

Thanks for your reply Jesse. I was just yanking your chain a bit about the caterpillar (sorry). I have no idea either. :)

I've only heard of and never seen a hummingbird moth in person. But if I were to label any moth as such, that seems like the one.

Clearwing moth? Interesting. I just went looking for a pic and they are neato! You have those near you? Cool...

I guess I'm really becomming a bug man. This was with my wife's P&S, and the light sucked, but I figured if I moved, it would leave.

Do you use a fast shutter speed to prevent a little wobble? I cant stay still for the life of me. I've tried increasing the shutter speed to prevent a little shaking but that obviously affects lighting (even with the aperture all the way open at 2.8). Most of these shots look like they were taken on a tripod.

Misled
04/12/2010, 05:48 PM
I don't necessarily use a fast shutter speed. You would be surprised how much movement is caused by using the shutter release on your camera. My remote is broken now and without it is annoying. Get a cheep wired remote shutter release. You should be able to pick one up for about ten bucks. You can also increase the ISO some, but remember if you have to crop the pic much the grainyness, (is that a word), may show more.
The other thing to remember is not to try to be too stiff. Relax. Most people shake more when trying to be perfectly still.

You'll find one of the most important things when getting into bug as well as extreme macro photography is light light light! Next to the lens a flash becomes one of the most important tools. Especially since you're often working at extremely small apertures with horrid light. You can have a relatively slow shutter speed, yet still freeze motion a subject. If you use your flash as your main light you're freezing the motion with the flash duration rather than with having a super high shutter speed (where ambient light is already limited).

Sweet Cody!!!!! Did you use the tubes with that shot?????

Dino

Yep, that was at full 2:1, the width of the frame should be 11mm. The past few days I've been shooting with a new flash diffuser I built. Ditched the one I bought and built a DIY coke can diffuser (http://www.flickr.com/groups/macroviewers/discuss/72157594312315664/) out of two popcans and some duct tape.

Also built me a stick out of a wooden broom handle and a deck screw. Its just a broom handle with a spike on one end. Now I have a walking stick AND something to brace myself for those shots that you're swaying just enough back and forth you can't quite get steady enough to get the focus right on the eyes (or whatever you want in focus).

Geez, I've been slackin with this thread.

Z.X, post #79 really does it for me. Given that the spider was probably sitting there pretty motionless for a while (yes?), I would have gone with a greater depth of field. A minor quibble though on a really neat shot. #90 is very nice too.

Jesse, the spider on the water surface is awesome. The spider is so light and hydrogen bonding so powerful that the spider doesn't even dimple the surface. Cool.

Dino, the crane flies here are no where near as interesting. Nice shot.

I was drawn in by the inquisitive nature of both child and butterfly; a look of innocence, wonder and amazement as the child gazes at the butterfly, its own antennae extended forward in a similiar show of curiosity.

Somewhere around 4:1-5:1, that's the central vein on a leaf.

That is tiny! Nice shot! Are you using the MP-E 65?

I wish :D (the MPE has long been on my lust list but I just can't justify the cost of it.....yet). Nope, this was taken with a full set of Kenko tubes, 100mm macro (non-L), and a reversed 50mm f/1.4 on a crop body. I'm told max magnification on it should be somewhere around 4:1 but doing some testing the other day at max I can fit about 4 marks on a mm ruler in the viewfinder. How accurate the ruler is, is debatable but I know placing two sewing head pins side by side fills the entire viewfinder :D.

Not a stack, I'm still learning how to do stacks. I need to find some good static subjects I can practice doing stacks on. I've done them a handful of times in the past but they've always came out looking pretty gnarly .

:wavehand: from a fellow POTNer.

11/02/2010, 05:39 PM
Yea, I've had a cheep set for a bit now. They're the 10 buck set without any electronics. That was with all three tubes and the 105 macro. I'm sure you understand, but most wouldn't think about how difficult focusing can become with them. Getting a good DOF can be tough too. I think I had that at f5.6 and in pretty much full sun. Any lower and you can't see what you're doing. I gotta get the set you have!!!!

Dino
11/02/2010, 05:50 PM
You could also look around for an old (manual) macro lens that has an aperture ring on it since you have the non-electronic rings and a cheap glassless adapter to adapt from whatever lens mount to your current Nikon mount. :D It still wouldn't automatically stop down but at least you wouldn't have to put the lens on the body to adjust the aperture.

I'm actually looking to do something similar if I can get somebody to buy me an old set of bellows for Christmas . I already have/can get enlarger lenses (the type you use in darkroom enlargers) for cheap. I've been reading a lot on people using them for extreme macro, they're so cheap, and most of them are extremely sharp.

These little guys pack a punch! I was trimming a tree and grabbed a handfull of branches from the ground and quickly realized that the willow tree had a little more than leaves on those branches. It felt like 10 bee stings all at once, then went tingly numb. I was a little worried at first, but it went away in about 20 mins.

They do make a pretty pic...to bad I'm a novice with the camera and only working with the kit lens. I'm sure you guys could have done a lot with this little guy

I'm sure you guys could have done a lot with this little guy

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_9tPmaU9n4fY/TN-XwzURXPI/AAAAAAAAA8o/Dr1hGgYtVjE/s800/Caterpillar%202.jpg

Those guys are Rad! I think its a Satunriid moth of some kind (A group of large moths found world wide). Some species can sting as caterpillars are extremely venomous!

I think the venomous genus is a tropical group called Lonomia. The caterpillars are gregarious and travel in groups which makes encounters with them potentially hazardous or deadly.

Cool Stuff!

Nice. We got a couple of new lenses yesterday. Went out this morning to the park down the street and spent an hour and a half sweating & taking pics, got home & realized I didn't change the settings after my boyfriend took moonlight tank pics last night. Nothing usable except a few flowers in my flowerbed when I realized the setting wasn't right *sigh*.

Sometimes. Depends on available light and what I'm expecting from the shot. It's something you can tell just by looking at the area. If it's shadowed and I'm shooting with a smaller aperture, yes. If I'm really close, almost always yes as it can help control shadows. If I'm at a little distance, (not much needed when shooting at 2.8), I'll try to use what's available if it looks good.

I always shoot in raw.
I use Photoshop CS 3 and Lightroom, though I haven't put the time into learning Lightroom yet, so most is with PS. I started with PS Elements which is very inexpensive and will give you most you would need. You should have something that came with your camera for RAW editing.

Thank you! I will look into my camera box to learn more about RAW.
