I used to leave my moon lights on. 4 LEDs that did a great job of lighting up the tank at night. I work rotating shift work and have plenty of opportunity to watch my tank at night. Recently I thought I would turn my LEDs off at night to give total darkness. 6 hours of black.

Well recently I went down after lights off to have a look. All my coral are inside out with feeders stretched out long. I have a frag of Favia that has 2 inch sweepers!!! Never ever have I seen any of my corals do what they are doing in darkness. I have done some other stuff to improve the stability of my tank and recently changed my 150w 10K to 250w Phoenix 14K. Regardless of reason, my tank has really taken off lately.

I am curious how much total darkness is helping.

Sorry, but these are the best I can do with an auto focus camera in the dark.

So any thoughts on this of corals needing dark periods?
