View Full Version : Do you lose fish in your Nano????

I started this 24g nano a little over a year ago. My first fish purchase for the tank was a Clown fish, scooter Blenny and a blue/green chromis.

Eventually I wanted a few more blue/green chromis' so I bought 2 of them and after two weeks, they were "gone"! Never to be seen again.
Well, after another few months I thought I would get a six line Wrasse......... 2 weeks later, GONE!
The last purchase was a Firefish and Fowleria Cardinal fish. These lasted for a month and a half but have finally dissappeared!?!
I have also lost my Scooter Blenny, he has been gone for 3 weeks.

Only thing I can think of is my Knobby Brittle Starfish is catching them in the rocks and eating them?? (about 16" from point to point)
You would think they could get away? I wonder why a scooter Blenny would last so long as slow as it is?

what color is your brittle? If it's green, there's a good chance he's gobbling them up.

However, I thought I lost my purple firefish.. didn't see her for a few weeks.. then, one day.. BOOM! Out she comes, healthy as ever.

I also thought I lost my Randall's shrimp goby, but he ended up in my sump..

The brittle is a tan color.... The Firefish did that when I first got it and then came back out but these fish have been out of site for months! I think its fishy heaven for them.....:(

I thought only the green was bad but I did get on liveaquaria and it says that mine will eat slow moving fish.... NO wonder that sucker is so big!!

wow, I didn't know they even had those colors. Right now I have a very small black brittle and a very tiny red brittle. They're neat stars, but you don't see them much.

Sometimes fish will jump and you don't see them either, unfortunately. Thats happened to me before.

Also, very small fish will die and essentially disolve in the tank pretty quickly. I remember reading about that on wetweb

Starfish can be aggressive and eat fish, esp a starfish 16" across.

All fish are slow moving at night and I don't doubt your starfish is dining lavishly at your expense.

Yeah, hes living the good life!

He's very big....I come in in the morning and there's an arm out of the rocks on one side of the tank and one out the other side usually.

Same thing happened to my purple firefish. I fed him one night and tomorrow night it was gone (assumed dead). It was perfectly healthy, just him in the tank.

Bristle worm isn't going to carch a fish unless it's already dead.

dumb question but have you check behind your tank? My sister was cleaning up one day and found a couple carpet surfers that flopped under and edge of something.

Also do you have pets? cats? Maybe they are jumping at the tank to get jumpers and running off with the fish.

Although if they did die I am sure your clean up crew would clean them up in no time.

The tanks totally sealed so they didn't get out. This tank is at my office so no pets.
I'm sure they're dead...something got them and I'm thinkin it was the Brittle Star.

I had a black crab that was snatching them up at night. Had to completely gut my tank and get him out. Look for hairy legs = no good

I have a mystery black crab too.....about the size of a nickel. I saw it for the first time today. It wasn't bothering anything, but looked vicious! He scooted into the rocks before I could get him.

My tank had been up for over a year when I decided to add a couple fish. First I added 2 small yellow blennies. Within a few days they disappeared. I replaced them with 2 clown gobies and they
disappeared. About 6-8 peppermint shrimp also disappeared. I decided to just stick with the coral softies & my clean up crew.
I bought Stevie T's fish guard to keep the snails in the front part of the tank. I don't think these fish went over to the back of the tank, I never found them there, just snails.

I didn't add anymore fish for about 5 months. I then added 3 green chromis...one disappeared right away. The other 2 are still going strong. Several months ago I added 2 scooter blennies and they're fat & happy & I'm very happy these fish are doing so well.

if you want to get rid of the starfish, would a couple of harlequin shrimp do the job? I know they will eat pretty big chocolate chip's, my rainford's gobies went MIA the first night I got him :( Good Luck with this!

All fish will die of natural causes if something else doesn't get them first. That doesn't explain why so many are dying so suddenly. Maybe there's a virus or something in your tank. The fish black plague or something. Anyway, good luck.
