That is a little to much considering how fast it grows!
I have had mine since April and it has grown 5 new eyes.

its a beautiful peace but i would rather get a little frag and let it grow out. its cheaper and i get a great feeling of acomlishment knowing that the colony of coral in my tank is MY colony. but whatever floats your boat.

"Retail $2,500"

Are they nuts? Our economy is in a crap shoot, and they're hoping for $2,500 for a piece of coral.

Get out of here.

No way in the world is any coral worth that much. Even more so when you consider that there's always the chance it could die. I think those people should all give me their money since they obviously have loads to waste.

It's a really fast grower, I got a frag around september of last year with 2 eyes and now has more than 20 eyes.

I agree. It's a collectors piece. I hope it does go for more money, wouldn't want the market ruined before I sell some of mine.

It's probably going to go to a chop shop to be cut and sold as frags...

I agree. The only purpose to spend that kind of money on a coral. Unless the buyer is EXTREMELY inpatient. And wants the whole piece right now. But I am doubting the latter.

BGM has hold it's value through this recession and maybe the person that is trying to buy that pieces like to have a big colony for show.....it isn't all about the money imo

Since we are on BGM where do you guys have yours placed in the tank?
What do you guys feed it?
Mine has two eyes and love it as a frag. I will be thrilled when I can say I have 5 eyes 8 eyes!

Placement- Mine is on the sand bed in medium flow. It's almost a half shaded area. 2 x 250 watt DE halides with T5 actinic supplement.

Feed it- I don't really. About every two weeks I mix a little coral frenzy up and dose the display with the return pump shut off for around 30 min. The closed loop is left on during the feeding to keep the food suspended.

I've had mine for around 6 months. It came to me as an almost dead eye. Nothing left but just a speck of pink left in the eye.
This is when I got it.

gws76 - great piece!
Mine is 1/4 from bot, not in a shaded area at all. 1 full head with another comin. Had mine for about 2 months now and hav seen the new head get bigger.
I am glad to hear that you do a coral tank feeding like I do so that every coral that wants to feed can, instedd of just target feeding.

Does anyone have their BGM under complete full exposure to the lights?

I had mine around 8" from 250W Metal Halides and it grew pretty good but it started to bleach on me so now I have it around 24" from the lights and is growing nicely.

When I change to my 180 I will need to rethink coral placement once again and this one is one coral that I definitely want to place well.

I was not lucky enough to get mine cheap. I ended up paying $225 for that almost dead eye. I remember calling the seller after it showed up like that. He was like "Bro, it's all good. Just give it a few weeks to heal. It'll be fine". I guess he knew what he was talking about. Some chalices just don't ship well. But they can come back from the dead.

The prices on the BGM seems to be sliding down though.

I know that just about all of them don't ship well.. I just ended up with fakes... But if someone is willing , I have other chalices that I would be willing to trade..

Woah! That was close! I know it is an addiction but unless you want a big piece, a frag would give you an opportunity to watch it grow and you are only spending about $200 for one eye.

plancton

sadly it is. I sometimes want to quit because I find myself spending lots of money and time on my reef.

My BGM colony is over 17 eyes now, have fragged about 6 eyes off of it, and started with one eye a little over a year ago. Fast grower for sure. It looks really good as a colony.

Yes, it is an addiction. We should all be in therapy.

thuynhcl

it should be a crime....for the amount of money all of us spend on LE items

jsdancer

We certainly do get a sense of euphoria when the new specimen we just spent a great deal of money does well. Even great pride when we see it grow.
Then the business men in us leads to fragging and making back some of that money we spent in the first place.
What a cycle!

loads to WASTE?? "One man's trash is another man's treasure" To some people, if the coral pleases them, money is no object to personal satisfaction/happyness. And to own a coral that isn't seen in just every tank is also nice. The retail price of $2360 isn't what they were shooting for, but what you would expect to pay if you paid full price per eye. Some people buy for themselves personally and some buy to resale so you have to look at it from different points of view. In a way you're also paying also for someone's time/effort, TLC, and $$ growing it out and them taking the risk of a rare expensive coral dying on them. Some frags take years to grow out, so you get what you pay for....
