Hey guys well as a few of you know, I was going to sump my biocube 14 a few weeks back but ran into some funding issues. So I figured I would get it all put back together and post some pics. Now everybody can get put a tank with a name lol.

Its nothing too crazy. Just a BC14 with some mods.

- Removed the trim that goes around the side and front. (Still remaining is the part of the rim that goes around the rear chambers.)
- Center chamber filled with cheato and grape caulperpa.
- Korilia 1
- Homemade fuge light.
- Also topless with 150W 20K MH
- Milwaukee pH controller
- Think thats it.

Inhabitants -
- Yellow/Pink Reef Damsel
- Lil Red Scooter Blenny (And he eats pods AND frozen foods. Hes not starving. Sorry just didnt want to get flamed for that)
- Margaritas, Astreas, Turbos, just a 1 or 2 of each
- Feather duster
- Green Digitata
- Supposed to be a Purple Acro I bought about dead for $5
- Purple Haze encrusting monti
- Orange sherburt monti cap
- Asst. zoas. Never looked up the names.
- Kenya Tree
- Pulsing Xenia
- A ric
- A mush
- Grape Chalace

'nough talk, time for pics!

I appologize in advance for the not soo great pics.

Im slowly making my way into sps and they are doing awesome in my tank.

I do a 50% water change every week, top off with lime water, and sometimes have to use a little 2 part.
Baste my rocks once a week before the water change.
Feed rods coral blend 2 - 3 times a week.
Run my fuge light reverse cycle of my tank light.
Feed fish roe for the fish 2 times a week.
I just started using the blue and white filter media and am extremely happy with it.

Think thats about it for now, thanks for lookin!

Nice job on the Rimless Mod! How exactly were you going to do the spill over for the sump? Can you drill those tanks? I have an Aquapod 24 and have considered doing a sump.

THANKS! Its really pretty easy. I just stuck a knife it and cut all the way around. Carefully pulled up from the front and slowly pulled it all the way off. I cut of and sanded down all the things that work with the lid. Then I cut the part off that goes around the sides and back of the rear chambers and used silicone to put it back on.

And yes it is a fish need it light with a coralife 20k bulb

Thanks again! You just drill a hole in the bottom of the rear pane in the return chamber to run your overflow.

Yes, you can drill it. The back isnt tempered.

I reallllly wanna sump mine!

Aha!

I have a BC-14 sitting around (absolutely hated it, thought it was ugly as sin) and have been thinking about de-rimming it- glad to know its possible.

Looks a ton better IMO. Great work Adkins!

How much rock is in there?

I wish I would have seen this before I filled my tank with sand and water. I like the rimless look.

Is the BC14 glass or acrylic? I always thought it was acrylic. It seemed kind of light.

Its a little over 15lbs.

Believe or not, I actually did it with the tank full lol.

I like the rimless look as well.

That your very much for your kind comments! I think it would look great.

Rimless small tanks look soooo much better, because they look bigger that way.

I intend to get some more pics taken tomorrow, when I get my new sps frags.

Soooo excited about new SPS frags! haha

wow. there's a mod i hadn't seen! very nice man. i really like it, great job.

Is the rim smooth after you pull off the trim or did you say you had to sand it smooth?

I've modded my BC29 (still working on it). I drilled it and have a sump in the stand; happy to help if you have questions.

beetlenut33 - Awesome man sounds good! And thanks for the compliment.

MikePowell - Thanks a lot man!

jonnybravo22 - I think Im the only one that has done a BioCube. Yes, the edge of the glass is very smooth. The only thing you have to do is get off the mass amount of black silicone.

And I love the drilled BC29. Looks Great! Im still debating on doing my BC14 or a brand new 20 Long I have just sitting around.

I have to agree with MIKE, great job!

not sure if this is worth doing to my nanonwave considering my 150watt pendant would cook everything i put in there. maybe a 70watt is in my future!

Yeah I had to get a chiller with my 250W on my 14-gal BC. Otherwise the tank got to 90 deg in about 5 hours.

How did you get the rim off without scratching it up? I am worried I will scratch up the edge of the tank.

Also do you have issues with keeping snails in the tank?

Do you see them a lot? :D

Very nice, I agree the rimless AIO look is very nice. Ever consider a strip of black acrylic as a cover for the rear chambers? It would make the whole thing look really sharp.

im confused on how you took the rim off?

im going to try it on my biocube tomorrow. i plan on just using a dremel tool to cut straight up on each side where the back compartments start, then use a knife to peel the from rim off

you said you used a knife under it all first? i dont understand. isnt the rim connected to the vertical plastic pieces covering the back parts?

Do you think something like this would help get a rim off?

ok, so i got the rim off and most of the silicone, but how did you get yours so clean? i dont think ill ever be able to scrape all the silicone off. did you use a solvent?

Adkins.its
08/10/2009, 11:23 AM
mr pink floyd - Awesome and No solvent. I just used a single ended razor.

cherubfish pair - haha. That would be my best option! :p

lobsterotomy - lol. And yes I have considered it many times, actually!

Nataliek2270 - Me too! And thanks, I plan on it. :)

Tadashi - Just start with front and lift up. You wont scratch it. And I have no trouble with keeping in snails.

SAZAMA - Thanks a lot!

Tadashi WOW! wonder why? lol

exoticaquatix - Thanks and if its bigger than the 9 gallon, I would just use the 150.

Do you think by removing the rim from the tank it will be less stable?

I dont think so.

1. Because you still take the part that goes around the chambers, where the 2 pieces of glass meet, and use silicon to reattach it to the tank.

2. Because Ive have my that way for over a year and there are no seem issues.

3. The sides covers and whole bottom are glues on as well. Its a very solid tank.

it took probably an hour including cutting and scraping off all the silicone. it was tough but it came off.

looks great

thanks for an awesome idea
