I am thining about switching from Mag9 to Quiet One Pumps because of the wattage consumption, there's a big difference. I heard that MAG9s get a lot hotter and are louder than Quiet One. But when going to Marine Depot to purchase the Quiet One pumps, they receive 3 stars out of 5 out of 73 reviews and 4 out of 5 for the Mag 9. I'm not sure if its worth the trade - the 3 out of 5 star is making me change my mind in keeping the Mag 9 and also, the mag 9 pumps 950 gallons for my 90 gallons, if I were to decide with a Quiet One pump, which model should I go for? 3000 or 4000? They are both either below the 950 gph or above it. I dont know what kind of impact a 1017gph would do to my tank and 780 gph appears to be weak.

Mag 9, 950 GPH, 93 watts
Quiet One 3000 water pump, 780 GPH, 40 watts
Quiet One 4000 Water pump, 1017, 50 watts

I have a Q.O. 6000 on my 90. But I'm running a SCWD. and figured I'm actually getting about 650GPH. out of it. It's pretty damn quiet. The SCWD is louder.

I would suggest you stick with the Mag. It might consume more energy and run a bit warmer, but they tend to be a LOT more durable than Quiet One pumps in my experience.

At the marine lab where I work, our back room has a box filled with about 20 broken Quiet One pumps. We also have a bunch of Mag-drive pumps as well that are actually being used (because they still work). All the pumps (both Mag and QO brands) were bought within a year of each other, and the Mag-drives run just as well as they did brand new. The QO pumps on the other hand? They're basically expensive paperweights. Sure they probably just need a replacement part or two, but why bother when you can just use a pump made with parts that last?

My Quiet One 3000 is not very quiet. I am thinking of either an Ehiem or Ocean Runner.

All I know is I been using the same Mag pump for 6 years now. Very Reliable. If you want something good, look into Eheim pumps, extremely quiet and durable.

My MAg 9 works great on my 75.

I used a QO 3000 for a while and it was quiet at first then it got louder and louder as it aged. I finally just pulled out and got a Mag 9.5. I also tried to run a QO 9000 and that thing was the loudest piece of crap I have ever owned. It gave me tones of flow but it was very distracting as my DT is in my living room.

I have had both, I didn't notice the QO being any less quiet than the Mag and the Mag was definitely built better. I currently am using an Eheim, which I believe to have been worth the added cost. It is much quieter than either of the other two pumps.

This has been something i have been running myself mad over !
Thanks for asking this question. I think we can sit here for days and go back and forth on who has had luck with either pump. I was going to get the QO pump but i think ill save up and get the Eheim, big price difference but i think its the best choice .

Thanks

Had Queit One and Mag. Now run an Ehiem 1262 (80 W). Ehiem is worth the additional cost.

I tend to agree with others that the mag pumps are a lot more reliable.... I've had my mag18 for 4+ years :knock on wood:

Any reason that you are not considering an Ocean Runner pump?

I have a question then . . I'm also going back and forth between a Mag 9.5 and an Eheim 1262 my question is sort of plumbing related though.

What kind of connection would you use since the outlet is 5/8" out of the Eheim pump and I want to use 3/4" plumbing all the way up to the return connection to the DT. The Mag 9.5 is 3/4" and it seems like it would be easier all around to use that pump, but i don't want one little outlet size determine which type of pump i get . . I'm so confused when it comes to plumbing and the different types of connections.

I have a quiet one 4000, two mag 9.5's, and an Eheim 1262. The quiet one is by far the cheapest build quality of the bunch and is no quieter than either the eheim or the mags that I have. When I turn the quiet one off, it needs a jump start to get it running again. My one and only experience with a quiet one pump hasn't been a very good one and I wouldn't buy one again. On the other hand, I haven't had a single problem with either of the mag's or the Eheim.

The Ehiem 1262 has a 3/4 inch threaded output.
