Anyone try a yellow coris wrasse in a reef? If so, results?

I have 3 in mine. No problems.

I am guessing you are asking about Halichoeres chrysus?

I have had one in my reef for 5 years now without problems.

Great fish, should do fine. Mine is one of the most active fish in the tank.

I am planning on getting one, but am worried it may be too much competition for my mandarin. Wrasses are such active and voracious pickers.
Anyone keep them with a Mandarin?

I do. But my tank is pretty big. I have lots of pods to go around.

Yup, had both in my 29G, but I made the sure Mandarin ate prepared foods before I bought it. Both loved bloodworms and I used to put them in the corner so the mandarin could get some and they would always playfully rub each other as they ate. Gave the mandarin away when I upgraded tanks because I got more into wrasses and knew it would have a harder time with the mandarin in my new tank (more flow, no place to set food down for it to eat) so he found a better home.

I have some of the small snails from reefcleaners dot org. Would these be food for the wrasse?

What about with small shrimp like sexy's?

I think it would probably be a high risk move to put a yellow wrasse with sexy shrimp.. it is "iffy" with cleaner shrimp. Once mine hit 5 years old it got its appetite for cleaner shrimp and now I can't have anymore because of my yellow wrasse.. but it took 5 years of having cleaner shrimp live in harmony before that switch flipped on the wrasse.

I had the 1 cleaner shrimp as long as the wrasse then one day it was gone, thought old age got it, bought a new one, lasted less than a month... thought I just got a bad one, 3rd one I put in was wrasse lunch before it hit the bottom. That was when I knew what was going on.

How big was your wrasse after 5 years?

They're awesome fish, I had one then got rid of it when I went BB, now I have a bigger tank with a SSB so I'm going to get anoter to keep my SPS nice and pest free.

I still have my yellow wrasse, but when it got its shrimp appetite it was right around 4-1/2".. Now, 6 years in my care and probably close to a year old when I bought it. It is a little over 5" now, definately the biggest wrasse I have, my Potters wrasse is a close second though.

awesome fish and they are so bright it would be a great addition to your reef . there are a couple of things to look out for #1 flipping corals for bugs ,mostly frags get flipped . and #2 they sometimes litter the tank with sand when they bury and it can get on your corals but its harmless .they also can pick at corals but usually do not unless you starve them . other than that they are great fish ! good luck

An interesting thread.
Do these and other wrasses really need sand?
I have a BB tank, w/ a 6-line that I'm going to put in another tank(it sleeps in a hole in the LR).
But I want to get a Yellow Coris Wrasse, and a Red Velvet.

almost all wrasses except fairy wrasses and flasher wrasses bury themselves . thats not a 100% rule but except for the fairys and flashers most of them bury and the tamrin wrasses bury also .you can put a tupper ware container full of sand behind your rockwork and they will learn to use it for a sleeping spot but unless you already own them and are switching over to bare bottom it can be very stressful and thats what they die from usually stress related .

Sounds like a great fish. Thanks for the warning about the frag flipping.

That's good info iamwrasseman,

And sorry to hi-jack,
So if I get a Cirrhilabrus rubrisquamis, Red velvet, and did put a sand-shelter of tuperware after QT, do you think it'd be OK in BB 120g?

A cirrhilabrus rubisquamis will be fien with out sand, a yellow coris is what you'll need a tupperware of sand for. So yes it will be fine in a BB 120 WITHOUT any sand.

yup snook has it correct ! IMO the yellow coris is really worth it because they have great dispositions and they are a great colorful addition !
