View Full Version : Return plumbing size

I am wanting to use a 9.5 mag drive pump on a 90 gallon RR tank. The outlet is 3/4 pipe on the pump, but danner recommends 1.5 pipe connect to it. What size pipe do people usually use. 1.5 pvc is a huge pipe...... The return bulkhead is only 3/4 and I think that the return pipe in the overflow would have to be 3/4 or 1 inch to fit in there.

What is some suggestions that people have done in this situation.

use an adapter and maybe go 1"

To get any flow out of these pumps, you have to use 1.5" tubing (pipe) on the return. This is against all conventions with centrifugal pumps, however, this is what Danner recommends. Some find it convenient to just ignore the advice, and others turn the intake holes into drains, and plumb the return line up over the top of the tank. Tank manufacturers need to upgrade their thinking that corner overflows and 1" & 3/4" bulkhead holes, are reef ready.

Jim

+1 on tank manufacturers catching up with the rest of the hobby.

Not being able to see exactly what your bulkheads and overflow box looks like, this is just a wild thought.
I'd use the return bulkhead as a second drain ( 2 is better than one) and use 1" pvc pipe and run the return over the top of the back wall of the tank.

If a pump is built with a 3/4 outlet why would you need to go larger. I would assume they put thought into it before the built it.

Danner did put thought into it, and concluded that 1.5" pipe is the size to use. State exactly in the instructions for these pumps.

It is weird that they do this and recommend bigger pipe. But, pressure and flow is two different things. I understand the concept smaller hole=more pressure, larger pipe=more flow.

Is there other submersible pumps that run with a smaller pipe size? I have a 55 gallon tank for my sump and I am not able to run a external pump because the tank is all tempered glass "Perfecto tank".
