View Full Version : Add salt mix straight into tank?

I am at the stage where I'm ready to fill my 55G and sump with salt water mix for the first time. For routine water changes I plan on using a 15-20G container to prepare the replacement water. However, for my initial "fill" I would rather just fill it once with water straight from my RO/DI unit then add the salt mix straight into the tank to the desired SG.

I'm thinking that my powerheads in the tank will provide enough "mixing" to dissovle the salt as its added. Is this a bad idea? Should I instead make several batches in the external water change container and then fill the tank in stages from that?

for the first time ---there is really not a problem. After that I would mix it separately and add through your sump

if you have live rock or live sand i would mix it separately. i guess even if you have dead sand and dead rock i would still mix it in the container. if the tank is empty and you are adding stuff after the water than its ok imo

Yep, I've got dry rock and sand. I was planning to add the live "seed" pieces after the salt was in.

Thanks.

Just make sure you keep the pump & powerheads running to keep the water circulating so the salt doesn't just fall onto the sand.
